We've been paying a lot of attention to summer cocktails over the past few weeks, and the good old beer has gotten short shrift. But beer is no less loved here at The Kitchn, especially on a hot day, when popping the top off of a bottle takes about all the energy we can muster.
Ayinger is one we discovered recently and are now in hot pursuit of...
This German beer is one we recently had at a restaurant, and since the bartender poured it straight into a glass behind the counter, we didn't get a look at the bottle.
We're assuming from the taste that it was Ayinger's Bräu-Weisse, a wheat beer in the style of a Hoegaarden or Blue Moon. We don't claim to be beer experts, but we know that these beers are brewed with a higher proportion of wheat than barley and, occasionally, spices or fruit that give them a sweet flavor. Usually they're served with a slice of lemon or orange.
We love Hoegaarden but can usually only drink one or two, since it has a definite sweetness to it that can sit heavy in our stomach. Not so with the Ayinger we had (ok, two very large Ayingers we had). It was less full-bodied than other wheat beers we're familiar with and had a cleaner aftertaste with just a touch of bitterness.
Now the trick is to find it. Anyone know of local sources that sell Ayinger? Anyone else a fan of this beer?

They're not fancy schmancy, but I enjoy Pyramid Apricot Weizen Ale and Goose Island India Pale Ale on a hot summer day.

This is one of my favorite beers ever! BevMo usually carries it and if you are in SF, City Beer Store (http://www.citybeerstore.com/) might have it.

This would only matter to people in South Texas looking for it, but you can buy it for $2-3 a bottle (!) at the Ft. Sam Houston class 6 store on post... so not only do you have to be in this area, but you also have to be active or retired military :) So cheap though!

Huh. Try a Franziskaner Weissbier for a excellent German beer experience. Best off the tap...the bottled ones just don't hold a candle. Ditto the Ayinger, much better on tap.
