Kitchn Cure Monday Check-In: How Did the Weekend Bread (or Matzah) Baking Go?

2008_04_21-Bread.jpgcmcinnyc says: The focaccia was excellent. I had no idea it was that easy!
I'm excited to try some more varieties.

We were really pleased to see that several of you (and maybe more?) plunged into bread-baking this weekend in response to our weekend Cure assignment. Bread baking is unbelievably easy, and if you start to fit it into your weekly routine you'll find it hard to go back to supermarket bread. We're curious to know, though, did anyone attempt homemade matzah for Passover? Or perhaps just matzah brei?

See the most inspiring bread-baking photo below and find out where you can get that cute vintage breadbox to store all that homemade bread.

The vintage metal bread box above is $32 from Etsy seller rekindle. Do any of you still store your bread in a bread box?

And now for a very inspiring photo....

Flickr member d1g1t1ze made roast chicken, bread, AND home-brewed beer! In fact, the bread was made with spent grains from the beer she brewed. Whoa! We're impressed to no end.

Did you make bread or roast a chicken this weekend? Upload a photo to the Flickr group and tell us all about it here.

Look for more Cure progression tomorrow and Thursday - we'll be moving right along... Great job everyone!

I had a busy but pleasant weekend in the kitchen baking my first no-knead bread AND roasting a chicken. I started the bread on Saturday morning, we roasted the chicken Sat. night, and I finished baking on Sunday. Everything turned out well, and I accomplished two things I had never done before! Heck, I'd never even touched an entire raw chicken before Saturday (just those neat and tidy breasts), but I was impressed with my own courage!

Even better was that they both turned out amazingly! The chicken was so juicy and flavorful and the bread had a wonderful crust and a bit of tang thanks to the long rise.

I'm really happy that I learned how to do both, and I am looking forward to many future loaves and chickens! :)

I roasted my chicken this weekend. I'm very attached to a high-roasting butterfly method I learned from Cooks Illustrated, which allows me to roast veggies or make stuffing at the same time. Picture of the finished product here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/94538466@N00/2433137904/

Bread's on the way, I just didn't read the whole recipe far enough in advance to plan for the necessary length of time.

Amazingly enough I hadn't even heard about the bread baking extra credit mission - we are just that awesome. OK, so we stole the idea while having a weekend pint at our local brewpub who really IS that awesome. Aren't the best ideas hatched in pubs?

Glad you liked the photo!
