Holiday Gift Bag 2007: Win Confetti Cakes & Demolition Desserts

2-3-giftbagtopper3.jpg2007_12_14-GiveawayCakes.jpg

We are giving away one gift bag each weekday through December 21.
Happy Holidays from The Kitchn! | Previous Days' Gift Bags

12-1-ten.jpg Gift: Confetti Cakes and Demolition Desserts
Authors: Elisa Strauss & Christie Matheson and Elizabeth Falkner
Shop: Confetti Cakes available from Amazon for $19.79 and Demolition Desserts is also at Amazon for $23.10.

Two great bakeries, two very different cookbooks. Today we are giving away a copy of The Confetti Cakes Cookbook: Spectacular Cookies, Cakes, and Cupcakes from New York City's Famed Bakery and Elizabeth Falkner's Demolition Desserts: Recipes from Citizen Cake. Click through for more about each book, and instructions on how to enter our giveaway!

Elisa Strauss, famous for her life-like Manolo stiletto cakes made from scratch in her NYC bakery, Confetti Cakes, has come out with a spectacular cookbook, The Confetti Cakes Cookbook: Spectacular Cookies, Cakes and Cupcakes from New York City's Famed Bakery. If you're not up for making the stiletto, or a cake in the shape of a Chinese take-out box, there are other recipes in the book for a more relaxed skill level: Vanilla Sugar Cookies, Polka-Dot Cupcakes, and basics like Chocolate Ganache frosting. And when you're ready to tackle the dozen 4-inch square cakes in the Baby Blocks Cake, don't worry, Ms. Strauss has very detailed instructions and diagrams. This is not baptism by fire. It's baptism by butter and sugar.

Elizabeth Falkner's book, on the other hand, does not appear to have hot pink or stilettos anywhere. She branches out from cakes into the complex desserts that she is known for at Citizen Cake - things like balsamic-apple reduction, eggless lemon curd and Concord grape tapioca. She plays with her own unique sense of fun and whimsy - biscotti chopsticks make an appearance. Read for inspiration and to try new challenges!

Together, these books make a great pair.

To enter the giveaway, tell us: would you rather make a Stiletto Cake (Confetti) or Tiramasushi (Demolition)? Type a comment in the comment section below by 9 p.m. PT Wednesday/midnight ET on SUNDAY, December 16th. The winner(s) will be selected at random.

But as an amateur cake decorator, I'd like some inspiration and advice there, too.

Probably the Stiletto Cake, although both desserts sound yummy. I really want to make the concord grape tapioca. After a lifetime of avoiding tapioca (thanks to my mom's lumpy instant stuff) I had the good kind with distinct pearls and I'm obsessed with making great tapioca of my own. These books would be just my thing. I often make the desserts in my family when we all get together. (Or experimenting alone at home.) I even make my own birthday cakes even though the several families of my siblings and my parents are gathered at two homes across the street from each other that day shortly after Christmas.
