This small apartment kitchen has served this family well for 45 years. "A lot of the changes came out of necessity that comes with a growing family's needs," says Sally. Sally and her family often entertained large groups in their West Village brownstone apartment. They've also done catering, food styling, and wrote and tested six cookbooks here.
While Sally dreams of having a kitchen that looks like a butcher shop someday -- "everything gleaming stainless steel and all white tiles with old oak floors and a center island with a stove top" -- Sally, her daughter (and AT reader) Abby, and the rest of the family have many memories rooted in this kitchen. When Sally cooked for her children, she and a friend split large meat orders from a meatpacking district wholesaler. Sally's husband did most of the wiring in the kitchen himself. The window over the sink houses the mustard pot collection, which inspired Sally's first cookbook.

Is the apartment small or the kitchen small?
From my experience, that is a huge kitchen by NYC standards! My own kitchen is less than half of that.
Utter cuteness! I could happily live in that space - it's so inviting. Lots of good ideas too. Love the chair/ladder!
Very appealing room to enjoy the art of cooking. Seems much larger than the average apt. kitchen. I love the small table and benches. Perfect for playing a board game, sipping some hot chocolate or asking Mom if I could borrow a few bucks while home from prep school break.
This kitchen is adorable, warm and inviting. The little details are what makes it unique especially the booth by the window.
T.P. and Marie, the kitchen is small, perhaps average sized for an apartment. I was suprised to hear you comment that it looks large. When I looked at my pictures again, I realized that the proportions of the space are so great. That might be making it look larger than it is?
I'd love to enjoy a cup of coffee at your kitchen table - it's so inviting. It looks like a movie set!

In one word? Charming. Sure, the contemporary granite/stainless kitchens are nice, yet they lack the personality that you see here. I look at this kitchen and generate a picture of what the West Village used to be before the uber-wealthy invaded the city.
I love this kitchen; it has the sort of warmth and patina that it takes a lifetime to acquire, although few now even attempt such a home. I am not sure that I would know how to pull something off as skillfully and gracefully; there is a real knack to it.
One things though, that would drive me nuts -- lack of counter space. I really need an expanse of clear counter space in order to cook. I guess you use the little marble-topped table, but it is the wrong height... Where else can you set yourself up to chop and measure?

I find it inspiring and I simply love that beautiful window, it all seams unreal. Now that I think about it, you don't need a huge kitchen to feel comfortable and cozy, all you need is style and a good advice. I will start remodeling my kitchen and bath pretty soon and I already have a great idea that would fit my plans. I want to get new stylish vessel sinks and make some new adjustments to my home decor. Thanks for the tour!
