apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Chris and Heather's Serene and Hippie Kitchen
Kitchen Spotlight

We are just so smitten by this kitchen! It has so much going on for it: It's light and serene, and yet it's fun and colorful, too, with little surprises that make it so fun to look at. We bet it's really fun to cook in, too.

Heather says that they are very proud of their vintage-modern kitchen. They did remodel, but they did it without gutting the kitchen or trashing the cabinets. Instead, Chris painted all the cabinets, and even created a pantry closet out of a coat closet! They changed the top cabinet doors to ones with glass centers, which really helps make the kitchen feel even more open and light. In the comments, Heather notes that the kitchen paint color is Martha Stewart Fine Paints of Europe Aracuana (AR-14).

Cheery and bright, but also cool and soothing — what a great combination!

Where is the best place to buy a cool rolling island like that? I've got a makeshift piece of furniture in my own kitchen right now (a heavy wooden tv stand!) and would looooove something like this.

That one is from IKEA; I think it's the FLYTTA cart.

Check out the entire house tour. This home can be an inspiration to those who are afraid to just-jump-in-and-do-it! Actually, save the site as a "favorite" so that, next time you want to do something scary--like paint the ceiling green--you can refer back to the pictures for a courage booster.

I've been in many hippie kitchens and never, ever, seen one as clean or well kept as this one. Most have had very old appliances, ferns hanging about, baskets of hanging fruit and earthy pots.

@Iona -- I agree. This is not a hippie kitchen. It's absolutely lovely, though.
