• Cure Clock: 2 weeks remaining
• Cure Takers: 831
Good morning, Cure-takers! How was this past weekend? Did you try something new? Did you learn something new in the kitchen? We hope that you are enjoying your freshly organized and cleaned-out kitchen. I know I am! I finished moving around all my pots and pans and deep cleaned; it's a pleasure to reach for my bowls and pans because everything is much more organized and easy to find. I did try some new recipes (chicken in the slow cooker - so easy!) and I'll share one of them later today.
What about you? What did you do in the Kitchen Cure this weekend?
Good job and congrats to all of you who made forward progress in your kitchen! Even if you're not officially following the Cure, or just doing it lightly, we applaud any little bit you do in your kitchen to make it easier to work in and more fun to cook in.
Oh, and the cake pictured above was a Mother's Day edition of that lemon cake recipe from Ina Garten.
How did your weekend Curing go? Did you try cooking something new? If so, send us photos!

I made chili! It was accidentally the best corn chili I've ever eaten.
I started OUT making beans n' franks, a recipe I found on AllRecipes, but then I realized that the cream of soup that I thought i had was really tomato, the chicken breasts that I had wrapped up were really hamburger, and I didn't have any frozen broccoli - only frozen corn.
Thirty minutes and a handful of substitutions later...om nom nom. Best chili EVUH.

I cooked with rhubarb for the first time - I made a rhubarb-strawberry crisp based on a Joy of Cooking recipe. It was delicious (although a bit runny), and I already have some "tweaks" in mind for the next time I make it!

I hosted a mothers day brunch so I tried out a couple of new recipes. My favorite by a mile and one that will be on my brunch menu for years to come, was this goat cheese and artichoke strata (baked egg dish):

It completely, utterly rocked and was make ahead and impossible to screw up. I can't wait to dig into the leftovers.
I used Italian sausage in place of the ham, but I think it would be fab no matter what.
Another highly probable make again was Banana stuffed baked French toast:

delish and once again, easy and make ahead.

We finally used our new bread machine that we got for our wedding this past fall! I know that's kind of cheating as all we really did was put the ingredients in and let the machine do the work, but we had been meaning to try it out and we finally bought bread flour and did it! It came out fantastic. Just plain white bread but YUM! Unfortunately it wasn't done until about 10pm last night, but hot bread with a little butter is a pretty good late night snack. :P
also might need to get cleaning that fridge again this week...

it was a busy weekend so we kept it really simple. Made a batch of curried chickpeas which lasted us a few meals and then winged some wraps with what was leftover in the fridge; some leftover baccon and eggs from breakfast, spinach, mushrooms quickly sauteed in garlic and butter, bit of extra sliced onion with a bit of spicy mayo ontop. They were pretty good!
I did try making some gyro type things during the week which I have wanted to learn how to make for ages. They came out pretty good but were missing something. Was fun to try and good knife practice chopping all the veggies and meat up for it.

i didn't actually MAKE anything new, because our tight weekend schedule didn't allow the time, but I do have the ingredients ready to make the falafel from the post a few days ago. it's something i haven't done before.

I did a simple mother's day brunch with some fresh veggies from my CSA box:
wilted kale sauteed with garlic, onion and mushrooms, with an over-easy egg on top (eggs from pastured chickens!)
french toast - I like the Cook's Illustrated recipe
freshly squeezed blood orange juice
It was a lot of fun, not to mention much cheaper than a restaurant. Cheers!

I didn't really do anything new, but I was in the kitchen a LOT Friday & Saturday! I made dinner both nights, I made two batches (one in the slow cooker and one on the stove, simultaneously) of homemade chicken stock that equaled EIGHTEEN CUPS of stock! Then I whipped up these Caramel Cocoa Crispy Bars, then a strawberry pie! Whew! I'm tired just remembering it, and all the dishes I did! It felt really good to be in the kitchen.

I somehow missed that day in culinary school (Baking and Pastry Arts), so I'd never actually made them before. They were amazing! I was so proud!

I made my first ever cake and chocolate icing from scratch!
(It was only the recipes from the side of a cocoa can, but it was tasty and I was so proud!)

I made Mai Tai's for the first time. Not exactly "cooking" but food related none the less.

I made big crumb coffee cake with rhubarb- recipe courtesy of smitten kitchen. And my spicy bloody marys for Mother's Day brunch!
The cake almost killed me, but the bloodies soothed the stress away.

With an enormous amount of stress at work the last few weeks I am a bit behind in the Cure, but to make up for it I did some extra cleaning and roasted my first chicken. I used Ina Garten's lemon/thyme chicken recipe and while I didn't have everything it called for (forgot to pick up bacon) it turned out perfectly. I was worried it wouldn't turn out right, but it was juicy and tender and delicious. Had it for lunch and dinner. The gravy recipe she had didn't turn out for me, but I'm not surprised. Gravy is not my friend. Definitely need to put that on the list of things to work on.
