Our tour yesterday of Biggie's well-organized and bento-optimized kitchen made us think back over some of our favorite creative storage solutions from past kitchen tours. Read on to see our top five...

In no particular order, here are five creative storage solutions we've enjoyed from past kitchen tours and kitchen spotlights.

  1. David Lebovitz's vintage Champagne bucket.
  2. Great for utensils and spatulas. David inherited his, and he says that he likes to leave things out where he can see them.

  3. Robert and Elizabeth's vintage food scale with vegetables.
  4. What a great idea! The vintage scale hangs from the ceiling or wall, so it keeps your vegetables out of your precious countertop space. Plus it looks really cool.

  5. Kyle's IKEA hanging containers.
  6. These are cute, compact, and almost irresistable. We may need to buy a set for our new kitchen.

  7. Benita's organized casserole dishes.
  8. We like these dowel rods or boards holding the casserole dishes neatly in place. Very simple and clever.

  9. Devesh and Tara's Weck jars for spices and grains.
  10. And of course how could we pass up this beautiful, classic storage solution for spices and grains? We're planning on doing something very similar in our new pantry.

Hmm, so tons of plastic bins full of items in disarray and stacked on top of each other is "organized" now? I live in Japan, too, so I know how hard it is to have a lot of stuff and keep it handy and organized, but I don't think that plastic baskets that you have to dig through to get to what you need is really a great (or unique) solution. I also use baskets, but they aren't overflowing to the extent that Biggie's are since I don't like to have so devote so much of my limited storage space to variations on a theme (like having dozens of rice ball molds).

Biggie has got a tremendous amount of stuff stored in shelves that wouldn't hold up in cities in the summer. Spices that are left out in the open (and not in the refrigerator) rapidly turn to hardened spice bricks in the humidity. I keep all of my spices on one shelf in the refrigerator.

@Orchid64..I too had to take pause at plastic bins as organization. I am not the most organized person and I tried this a couple of years ago and thought it looked messy. There has to be a better way.
