Kitchen Spotlight: Yoko and Matthew's White Lounge Bar

Wine storage is something we've been thinking about lately, as we have a few bottles we'd like to store long-term. Well, Matthew and Yoko have a simply lovely spot for theirs, in their laboriously renovated home in San Francisco. Take a peek at their kitchen and their hard-won extra space: a little white lounge and bar.

This home was initially uninhabitable. It was home to various wildlife, and in a terrible state of disrepair. Matthew and Yoko slowly and lovingly renovated it to a point where it worked so well for them and their three-year-old. Now it really suits their style: "Scandinavian style meets California sun. Simple, natural, functional and cozy yet luxurious."

The bar was what really impressed us. Yoko created the wine rack herself. They say that "Yoko borrowed the contractor’s power tools – power saw and nail gun and built custom size wine rack for the bar."

Take a look at the full tour for more details and all the paint colors used in these rooms, as well as a photo of the kitchen before renovation!

Looks really nice, but what about temperature? We've aged a fair amount of wine and have had some mixed results when the bottles get too hot. Wine is best stored between 12 and 18 degrees C. It can be stored hotter, but I find that gives it a stronger more sour flavour and ruins some of the nicer subtle flavours. If the temperature ever gets up to 35C (as it often does here in Ontario summers), it can cause problems with wine that's ageing on the counter. We use a corner in the basement and it works beautifully, although we do wish it looked a little nicer.

Some day when we build a proper wine storage area, I'm submitting pics to this site.

Is that wine rack earthquake-proof to a point?

Love the way that looks! That whole storage area is just gorgeous, clean and neutral and just plain pretty. I'm a bit ashamed of the way we store our wine (gets morning sun on it, not laying down); but since we rarely keep nice bottles around for more than a day, it hasn't been a problem.
