Kitchen Spotlight: Waste Not, Want Not
Paris

raf4.jpgThere is not an inch of wasted space in François and Raphaëlle's compact Paris kitchen, which they designed as tightly as a ship to be a clutter-free, highly functional space, with cozy touches like vintage lamps and inexpensive framed reproduction artwork...

raf1.jpgThey didn't spend a lot of money or sacrifice on necessities, instead utilizing every inch of space, with vertical cabinets going up to the ceiling and room for a stacking washer and dryer.

raf6.jpgThe advantage to having a small space is that everything is just within reach.

raf2.jpgArtwork and soft lighting augment the overhead lighting and natural light from the window, to give the room a homey glow.

raf5.jpgThey're even installed a narrow counter with stools for quick breakfasts and coffee breaks.

Very cute space, although as far as function goes I don't think that would be even close to enough counter space for me to prepare anything. With that in mind, the sink looks disproportionately big - a treat indeed, but maybe more prep area would have been a wiser choice.

I love that sink area - so bright and cheery.

Cute! I love the sink area as well.

About prep room - the bar could always double as extra counter space.

...does that stove have a lid? it looks like the backsplash folds down over it increasing counterspace.

My kitchen is smaller than that, with less counter space. It's about that size, but without the extra bar. I do just fine for prep space. And honestly, if I had the option to get a bigger sink than I have as a trade off for some of the counter space, I'd do it. I've got this tiny one bowl sink, would love to have a two bowl. Unfortunately, to that, I'd have to give up the dishwasher and that's a non-negotiable.

I love this, love seeing well designed tiny kitchens. It looks about the size of my own kitchen, which had almost no counter space when I moved in. Someday I'd like to replace my ageing laminate counters with wood, and get a two-bowl sink (my cabinets are a weird size that is too small for a double sink) I put in a very small chest freezer, and swapped the giant fridge for a little 4.5cuft Energy star fridge that was the same height, and can use the fridge and freezer tops as additional counter space. When we have a party, I cover them with a big tablecloth and use them as a buffet.

DahliaCactus,
Yes, many European stoves have lids (including mine!). Very handy.
