Kitchen Spotlight: A Transformation in Encino

2009_01_23-Encino.jpg2009_01_23-EncinoThumbs.jpgHere's a little end of the week kitchen love for you. This dramatic kitchen transformation was sent to us by Joshua Rose, Rafael Kalichstein, and their Los Angeles design firm, FORM. We've seen FORM's work before, and we're impressed at every kitchen transformation from the group. We love watching old, tired kitchens transformed into fresh places to cook, eat, and nourish.

Take a look at this Encino kitchen -- there are more photos below, including shots of the kitchen before its transformation!

Josh and Rafael say that the clients wanted a more modern Palm Springs vibe that would still honor their traditional home and ethnic influences. So the designers tore down several walls and created an open floor plan for all of the common living spaces.

We love how the kitchen is now open to the rest of the house; it makes everything feel lighter and more inviting.

Beautiful and pristine. What's so funny is that not too many years ago white kitchens were utterly out of style (too 1990's), and not too many years before that they were all the rage (with black and maybe a bit of red, or maybe dark green, as accents... but not too different from this one), and not too many years before that, they were utterly dated (too 1960's), and so on. What's old is new and what's new is old, and we all need to keep remodeling to keep these suppliers and contractors in business.

A note on the farm sink: I put one (Shaw's) in my kitchen, installed in the same manner. I found it to be too low for comfortable dish washing. I think that they are really meant to be mounted so that the edges stick up above the counter. Also, my contractor and counter installer were dumbfounded as to how to make the counter meet the sink edge in the front. I ended up with a funny fitting job. Something to look out for if you are remodeling.
