Gallery: Looking Out the Kitchen Window

2009_06_02-Window.jpg2009_06_05-Thumbs.jpgIt's Outdoor Month, and we're going to be asking you for photos of your own outside spaces, big or small. But for many of us, the kitchen window is our link to the outside, the one place where light streams into our little kitchen or where we can watch our gardens grow while washing dishes. A kitchen window is a treasure; it lets in light and lets us look out at the seasons. Here's a look at a collection of kitchen windows, inside and out. Do you have a window in your kitchen?

• 2 House Tour: Jora and Bryan's Mid-Century Organic Remodel - Huge windows that truly bring the outside in.
• 3 A Fashion-Forward Home - Love how the window opens above the stove; what a good place for an open window!
• 4 Amish Kitchen - Light is nearly the only adornment in this plain Amish kitchen. By Flickr membercsyork65, licensed for use under Creative Commons.

BOTTOM ROW
• 6 Cheery orange window - Even though the day looks dreary, this window frames it in bright. Also with a great tip for cleaning windows: wet newspapers! By Flickr member amandabhslater, licensed for use under Creative Commons.
• 7 Eggplant Purple Kitchen - With another window over the stove, flung open to fresh air.
• 8 A tranquil view - By Flickr membergshowman, licensed for use under Creative Commons.
• 9 A lovely place to eat - A huge window with light for eating and cooking. A Small Cool 2009 entry.
• 10 White and green - Plenty of light for plants. By Flickr memberback_garage, licensed for use under Creative Commons.

Do you have a kitchen window? What do you see out of your kitchen window? Show us! Upload a photo of your kitchen window, inside or out, and tag it with thekitchn. If we see a few we'll roundup them up here on The Kitchn.

A kitchen window will be mandatory when we buy a house. 2 apartments in a row w/ no kitchen window.

If you plan to have kids at all, the kitchen window is best if it looks upon the outdoor play area (backyard?). That way you can be inside and still keep an eye on the kids - and be entertained. I have a friend whose kitchen window overlooks the fence and she just isn't comfortable having the kids (toddlers) outside without supervision, especially in a neighbourhood with back alleys.

No window in the kitchen in my townhouse. That's a must-have for the next place.

I have a pretty charmless apartment kitchen and a window is something I just covet. Next place, maybe!

Thought I was the only one without a kitchen window. And I dream of one someday!

I look directly at the Capitol Records building in Hollywood, palm trees, and downtown LA glitters at night.

I have 3 big windows in my kitchen--one over the sink and two flanked side by side in the kitchen nook. Bright and sunny--I couldn't imagine having no windows in there, or in any room, really.

It helps make cleaning the dishes easier when I can space out and look outside.

I have 2 windows in my kitchen, but neither is above the sink. I, too, love to look outside while doing the dishes.

I'm fortunate enough to have a window over the sink and four large windows in the adjoining breakfast nook. I absolutely love it! I've put bird feeders outside the windows and scatter corn along the fence line for the squirrels. I have several large trees to enjoy in my yard and in my neighbors' yards, and I also planted lots of flowering vines, shrubs, and potted plants that attract butterflies and humming bees. I love to watch nature as I cook and do dishes and when I'm sitting at the table drinking coffee and reading blogs online, like I am now.

Since my kitchen window faces the next building accross and alley-like space, and it's not a pretty view -- I opted to cover it for privacy yet still let in light. You can see it here, but the pic (the first one) doesn't do justice to how magical it is to see morning light through the colored (mostly mexican) glass. The white fabric covering the window is much lighter and translucent than the flas photo makes it appear:

Yes, I have a window in my kitchen but, as I don't know how to send it, I send the url of the photograph in Filckr. This is in Asturias, northern Spain.

Yes, I have a kitchen window. Not much of a view unless you get close and look at the newly landscaped courtyard 1 floor below, otherwise you see my neighbors kitchen window. Also, they didn't design the size of the kitchen in 1927 to accommodate the size and depth of today's modern refrigerators so mine now blocks half of the window.

that's so smart to have a window by the stove--a naturally green exhaust!
