My fiancee has one of these, and it is incredibly useful. We have a small kitchen with pretty bad counter space otherwise, but the island gets a TON of use for prep and storage. We'd be lost without it. The good ones will last forever, too, so the investment is worth it.

I got a kitchen cart for my dorm room. I kept my food and supplies underneath and the top served as a TV table. It had a large slide-out wooden cutting board that made a great food prep area that was easily transported to the community kitchen. It was cheap, but it has moved with me several times now and is still as good as new!
