Look! Windows Under Kitchen Cabinets

2008_07_24-Kitchenwindows.jpgLook at this lovely kitchen from Anne's Sunny Renovation, a tour of an environmentally-conscious home redesign at our sister site Re-Nest. Our favorite feature is the placement of windows between the kitchen cabinets and countertops. Read on for another photo and the details on why this is a green feature.

2008_07_24-Kitchenwindows2.jpgFrom the original entry:

The kitchen cabinets are made of Lyptus, a quick harvesting wood. The backsplash tiles are recycled glass and the countertops were used from scrap stone from a previous project.

Windows located between the countertops and cabinets provide additional natural light in the kitchen.

Of course we are big fans of natural light in the kitchen, and it seems like small windows like these, shielded by the cabinets, wouldn't need any sort of covering. They would let you see what you're cooking even better and cut down on the need for electricity in the kitchen.

What do you think? Do you like these windows?

Ok, this is green IF you're *adding* windows under cabinets to supplant lighting from existing windows. It is NOT green if you're installing cabinets above existing windows, because those big boxes are going to reduce the amount of light that is going to come in through the window, forcing you to turn on the overhead lights even in daytime.

As someone with a windowless kitchen, I love it!

But, does anyone else find it *funny* that the overhead lighting above the kitchen island is illuminated in the second picture even though there is abundant daylight streaming in through the windows? It kind of negates the whole "green" point, now, doesn't it?

My office did this for a country house to give views down to the lake and it looks and works great. I never even thought about any possible "green" benefits.

I also kind of wonder if all those massive appliances and tons of track lighting and drop lights kind of negate any "green-ness" of having the windows. But the kitchen is gorgeous, and I love that the cabinets are made from Lyptus.

I just love windows in a kitchen. Period.

Especially over the sink!

Well, except for the window in my own kitchen that looks out to an airshaft and is covered in lint from the laundrymat downstairs....
