Last spring Sunset ran a project that invited readers to vote on and help design a dream kitchen. The whole kitchen has been built since then, and contrary to what might be expected from a design-by-committee process, we actually love it. The principal thing we like in this interesting kitchen is the circular island.
We really like that large expanse of workspace at the center of the kitchen, a workspace that doubles as an inviting and friendly bar for guests. We have such a hard time entertaining in the kitchen, since it's hard to chat with guests and work at the same time. This island just looks like it would make that part of entertaining a little easier.
We also like the built-in drinks cupboard in the kitchen (a wine fridge!) but its placement behind the stove (and chef) seems a little awkward for guests.
What do you think? Would you ever install a circular or semi-circular island?

My mom was just talking about adding an island to their kitchen, and I suggested the semi-circle. They currently have an eat-in kitchen and would have to remove the kitchen table to accomodate the island, and I thought the semi-circle would make it feel more "table-y" than the standard straight countertop breakfast bar. Now I feel vindicated as a kitchen designer! :)

Definitely prefer the semi-circle, or at least a corner where the stools can be placed at an angle to one another. Otherwise, if you have more than two people at the counter, it's hard to interact.
Just like that Seinfeld episode where the gang had to sit at the counter at Monk's and they no one could follow the conversation.

I've been designing my "dream house" for when I get to build eventually (going with eco-friendly strawbale!) and in my kitchen I keep coming back to the idea of a semi circular island with the stove top built in -- I'd never actually seen a kitchen like that though -- SO COOL to see this idea show up in real life, and turn out so well.
Also, I love the idea of putting cabinets on the bar side of the island too --- great for those bulky appliances and other little used kitchen stuff.

I wish I had room for an island - and a semi-circular one at that! I think this is great, but I'd feel a bit like a blackjack dealer.
