Do You Have a Kitchen Bar?

2009_04_17-bar.jpg2009_04_17-barTS.jpgOne thing I am currently wishing for in my kitchen is a long bar that is open on both sides. Whenever we have guests at meal-time or while I am cooking my back always has to be to people. It's hard to cook and talk at the same time. Do you have an open bar in your kitchen? Here are a few examples of open bars in small kitchens from this year's Small Cool contest.

There are many advantages of open bars in small kitchens. They give a more open look and spacious feel, letting the kitchen be part of the living space, and not chopping it up. They also can be built-in places to eat, so you don't need to bring in a dining table. But they also can mean less storage, with no upper cabinets.

Do you have an open kitchen with a kitchen bar where guests can sit and chat with you while you cook? Do you like it? Do you wish you could close off your kitchen a little more? Tell us

I could not live without a kitchen bar. My kitchen is a modified version of the G-shape kitchen. My stove is on the side which allows me to see my guests from the corner of my eyes. The top of the kitchen bar section is wider. It is my favorite prep area. This way, I am back to my friends only when I need the sink.

I wish for a long island/kitchen bar but this was the best fit for our space.

I have an open long bar that can seat three. And it is a nice spot for people to hang out while I'm cooking. I can usually get folks to chop something for me when they sit there and we hang out.

... just did a full reno of my small house. My kitchen window faces North and it was very, very dark. We have a long bar/peninsula as in #8 & 9 "earthquake shack". No place to eat... wouldn't work... as I said, small house. The light just pours in now from the dining area where I have HUGE windows.

Now... at heart I am a messy cook and now EVERYONE knows it. I don't care. I can talk to my family and guests and still have my space. The dining table is just on the other side of the bar. I set up appetizers and the bar there and let everyone help themselves while I do my thing.

One problem though... hard to block out TV and other unwanted noise. I use my iPod earphones a lot.

OH! One more thing... I have 1 shallow and 2 deep, large heavy-duty drawers on the kitchen side for storage and shallow cabinets on the dining side... I store wineglasses, liquor and linens there. I love it!

i have both yay and nay days with our bar. on days when i have company, its nice to have a place for someone to sit while i make magic. every other time of the day i wish everyone would find a different place for their clutter.

I agree with aneelee re: counter clutter. Our bar -- which is between the kitchen and the kitchen table -- is essential for letting light into the kitchen and opening up the kitchen to the rest of the (very, very small) house, but it's also where the laptop, junk mail, dirty dishes, broken toys, cold medicines, etc. inevitably pile up.

I don't have one in my kitchen, but my boyfriend's mother has an island in her kitchen that is work space on one side and bar stools on the other, and it is one of my favorite places to be. I'll sit there and drink some tea while she's cooking or picking up (although, when writing this it makes me feel like I should be helping her instead of just sipping tea), and we chat. It's hard to say how nice it is without sounding ridiculously sentimental.

It says there are 9 comments, but for some reason none of them are showing up.
At any rate, all I was going to say is that I have neither a bar in my kitchen, nor a penis cake pan on display over my stove ;)

oofs- I'm SO GLAD you have seen that pan before. That's my kitchen in the pic and I swear- it looks nothing like a penis in real life!
