What's in Your Freezer?

2007_06_29-Freezer.jpgOther than the obvious (bags of frozen peas, popsicles, and ice cream) we were taught to keep certain things in the freezer for freshness and taste. Things like:

• Opened bags of powdered sugar
• Unbaked sheets of pizza dough
• Nuts
• Wheat germ and other grains
• Overripe bananas
• Bread or English muffins on sale and bought in bulk
• Homemade chicken stock

We still keep most of those things in the freezer, but we've added a few more:

 
 

• Soft or brown vegetables to use for stock
• Leftover soup
• A bottle of good gin

And we've broken with family tradition by NEVER keeping our coffee in the freezer; the cold itself doesn't hurt it, but the evaporating moisture when it enters and leaves the freezer quickly damages flavor.

What do you store in your freezer, as opposed to the cupboard?

Unroasted beans keep a very long time.

Unground, roasted beans at room temperature, airtight. Use ASAP but if you roasted them yourself, wait 3 days or something like that. If you bought them, you're good to go.

Ground beans - use that day. If you can't, room temp and airtight.

I always store my grounds in the freezer, but I go through my coffee so quickly I don't think it matters! I also recently started storing butter in the freezer, I don't know why, I think my friend's boyfriend got me started.

I know I ought to keep nuts in the freezer, but when I get a snack attack, freezing cold nuts just don't do it for me. Mind you, rancid nuts aren't that tasty either....

I keep my too dry to iron shirts, tablecloths etc. in the freezer. When you do get round to ironing them it takes no effort.

I've heard that coffee in the freezer is a generally bad idea, even though so many people do it. You take it out to make coffee, condensation forms, you put it back, it freezes on the grounds/beans, again and again. Not so good.

What is the notion of powdered sugar in the freezer? I haven't heard that one, as I'm not much of a baker and use it sparingly.

I keep Lychee jellies in the freezer for quick summer frozen treats. I also store my cake yeast there. I hope that's okay!

I've never heard that powdered sugar and gin should be kept in the freezer. Why is that?

I also freeze butter. And steel cut oats and bay leaves.

Actually you can store powdered sure (very fine) and brown sugar. They both become a rock once in contact with air inside a cupboard. That does not happen to them in the freezer. I also use the freezer to freeze unwanted fat from baking a chicken or lamb. Once the fat becomes a rock, I though it out on trash day, so it doesn't get messy.

I put flour in my freezer. I don't bake very often but buy the good stuff. It keeps for ever.

I put brown sugar in a mason jar. It keeps moist, even in the cupboard.

Vodka, certain types of cheeses when the store has a good sale, extra loafs of bread, pesto, and leftover soups & stew.

I got so behind with eating the zucchini and summer squash from my CSA box that I have three large bags of sliced squash in my freezer too.

Opened bags of powdered sugar? I stuck mine in a mason jar and put it in the back of the cupboard...should I pop in the freezer now?

Standard frozen fare in my freezer. Bread, berries, veggies, and about a gallon of pepper pot from Christmas.

We keep our coffee in the fridge and generally go through about a pound a week (2 people).

We keep:
Cooked beans (so we don't have to use yucky canned ones), vegetable stock, frozen vegetables, ground flaxseed, frozen strawberries for pancakes, 3-4 leftover meals (so as to avoid takeout), and frozen Rafetto's ravioli. Actually that last item never makes it more than a week...

Camera film. Can't say why, other then my camera-loving dad does it. Keeps it usable far beyond the posted expiration dates.

Cooked white beans, ready for soup. Nuts, puff pastry, homemade crostata dough and pesto, ice packs for the cooler, 2 quarts of duck fat and some Flav-or-ice popsicles (heh) right now. We just moved so I only held on to the good stuff and gave away or trashed the things I wasn't going to use or that had hibernated too long.

I also freeze tomatoes when I open a big can of Muir Glen but only need part of it. And when I buy a baguette and can't use it all that day, I slice up the rest and freeze the slices for crostini or topping soup. A couple minutes in the toaster over and they're perfect.

I have a very small freezer so all I've got in there are ice cubes, curry leaves, and a small tub of duck fat. There was pesto, too, but I finally used the last of it a couple weeks ago and am looking forward to making it fresh for the rest of the summer. If I had room for anything else there would definitely be a bottle of gin in there, too.

I keep vodka, chocolate chips, lots of different kinds of nuts, home made chicken stock, over ripe bananas for the banana bread that I will never make. I used to keep egg whites because Nigella said I should, but I never did end up making a merengue and wound up throwing them away. I also have some really nice Toulous sausage and a bunch of TV dinners that a kindly old neighbor gave me. They look disgusting but I feel bad about chucking them. He's such a nice old man.

Vodka, ice, pastry, coffee, spare bread, soup, herbs picked from the allotment when there's too much to use at once. Gin is evil! [shudder] I didn't know you were meant to keep all this other stuff in the freezer tho! My nuts, bananas, wheatgerm, pesto, sugar, all live in the cupboard. Should I move them?

I keep the worm food (vegetable waste for vermicomposting) in the freezer - that way it doesn't stink up the kitchen while it's waiting for me to haul it outside!

And large containers of... water! I heard that freezers (and refrigerators) run more efficiently if they are 3/4 full. Is that right? My freezer is large, so I keep stacks of water in there. And besides, if there's a water problem in the building or city, I can always thaw those out and drink them, right?

like cremarie, I too have a small ben and jerry's container of "pre compost" so I can store the veggie waste before I get to take it out to the mini composter. Keeps the flies/smell away, and the freeze/thaw cycle helps break it down.

I bake a lot of pies so I keep all my fats and flours in the freezer to keep everything nice and cold when making my crusts.

i have lemonade ice cubes, russian vodka, garlic bread, fudge-sicles, lots of already made pasta; two pints of ice cream; waffles, pizza. but will be adding my new bag of powder sugar and flour thanks to your comments. :)
