Weekend Project: Family Brunch!

2009_01_16-WeekendBrunch.jpgWhether your family consists of you and your partner, your dorm-mates, your kids, or your cat, why not treat yourselves this weekend? We might mix up some pancakes or splurge on bagels and lox, but rarely do we spend the time to make the full breakfast spread. So grab your bathrobe and your spatula, and let's crack some eggs...

To us, the "full breakfast spread" means eggs, bacon, home fries, and a starch in the form of pancakes, waffles, or hearty toast. There must also be choices of condiments, ranging from sweet jam to ketchup. And of course, coffee. Lots of coffee.

Taking the time for a full breakfast also means sitting down at the table and taking our time. We settle in with newspapers and books, and prop our feet on spare chairs. We don't put leftovers away, but leave them out for nibbling. There's not always time to do this, even on the weekends, so chilling out over a long breakfast is a real luxury for us. Like taking a mini-vacation in our dining room!

So no big project to mull over this weekend - let's just enjoy a leisurely breakfast instead, ok?!

Here are some of our favorite brunch recipes. What are yours?

Eggs Benedict and Beyond
Individual Baked Eggs in Ramekins
Golden Oat Pancakes
Big Pancakes
Oat, Pear, and Raspberry Loaf
Overnight Oatmeal with Apricots and Buttermilk
Fresh Cranberry Scones

I'm going to try the Zucchini-Potato Frittata that the kitchen posted. Already have my grocery list ready!

I tried doing this earlier this week when family came to visit. I say "tried" because no matter what I do, my pancakes always find some new exciting way to be awful. It's pretty pathetic :(

We are big on Sunday breakfast/brunch here, especially in the winter when it's not golf season.

We usually have frittatas, hash browns, bacon/sausage, homemade cinnamon toast/english muffins. Or instead of the eggs, french toast, or waffles.

It's nice to have the fireplace on and relaxing on cold winter days with tasty food. Then taking a nice long nap!

Usually the kids come back home on Sunday. They request different things, like french toast, waffles, or pancakes. There is always bacon and eggs and biscuits or grits. On vacation we pick up special jams and syrups and these make it to the table on Sunday. There's the newspaper and any mail that gets here, gets put in their hands. Problems get talked up and solved, victories celebrated, bless us all on Sunday.

My roommates and I make a point of having a big breakfast together on Sundays - usually pancakes and bacon and potatoes, though there have been breakfast wraps (with fresh tortillas!) and latkes, among other things.
In the New Year we've expanded it to include another four friends, who come over for a massive feed as a prelude to our weekly Dungeons and Dragons game.
Nerdy, but delicious.
