Weekend cooking - any plans? A suggestion: take the opportunity to make some extra-nourishing food before the busyness of holidays. Hot soups, warm breads, and winter vegetables keep us going this time of year, a preemptive antidote to the sugar rush waiting around the corner! Here are a few menus from our archives - warm things to cook and eat.
No dessert for these menus - we are eating lots of early winter citrus like tangerines and clementines to satisfy the sweet tooth. Plus all that vitamin C is fighting the off the colds; each of these menus should help with that too.
Hearty and Spicy
• Chickpea and Chorizo Soup
• Braised Collard Greens with Bacon
• Rosemary Focaccia Bread
Leafy Green and Aromatic
• Easy Kale Soup for One or Two
• Roasted Sweet Potato Sticks with Rosemary
• Parmesan and Chive Scones
Rich and Sweet (and Medicinal!)
• Sweet Potato Soup with Miso and Ginger
• Greek-Style Braised Green Beans
• Potato Dough Rolls
I'm going to try Pork Stew with Apricots and Prunes tomorrow. I think it looks good.

As a veggie I wonder if soyrizo will work in the chorizo and cickpea soup. Sounds wonderful....

falafelmama,
I think soyrizo would do just fine. You could even try to roll it into "meatballs". That stuff is amazing! A friend brought me some and I loved it...and I'm a meat-lover!

Mmmm, I might try that sweet potato soup with miso and ginger. Tonight I am making a quick garlicky garbanzo bean and spinach mix served over whole wheat couscous, and starting a no-knead bread. Tomorrow I'll start baking long last Christmas cookies--lebkuchen and shortbread, and maybe a batch of something else. I'll start soaking some beans tonight but haven't decided what they'll become...

i'm cleaning out the fridge and pantry in preparation for a move, and am down to the barest of bones. i think i can throw together pasta boiled in stock tossed with sauteed brussels sprouts, caramelized onions, and butter and parm for my last civilized meal before the pans get packed away. what else would be good in it? i have some pine nuts, canned tomatoes, canellini beans...i probably wouldn't do all of that, but maybe one other thing? also, my spices are already in the new kitchen, so all i have is salt and pepper. ideas, please!
