Spring Kitchen: What's Holding You Back From Cooking?

2007_05_11-Cooking.jpgSpring is here and we've been busy. It's one of the ironies of May that while farmers markets are opening for business, and fresh green lettuces and new fruit are showing up, we are busier than ever. We're traveling and racing through work and school to finish off projects before the summer comes, and it's hard to find the time to cook creatively.

What about you? Are you finding fresh inspiration in the kitchen? If so, what's inspiring you? Or are you having a hard time staying in the kitchen? If so, what's holding you back from cooking? Busyness? Or would you rather just be outside?

ha, this is a good question. it feels too hot inside my kitchen to cook, already. i am learning to grill. i grilled a skirt steak last week.

the real wonders of spring are beginning to arrive at the market, and we had beautiful asparagus last saturday. that's inspiring me a bit, though i absolutely cannot wait for local strawberries!

I recently joined up with a CSA co-op, so I'm getting a basket of locally grown fresh produce every month. This inspires me not only because my money is staying in the community, but because the baskets often include items I've never cooked with.

P.S. What can I do with bok choy?

Bok Choy is great stirfried with oyster sauce. Maybe some garlic/ginger thrown in too. I love the CSA box idea but can't handle the entire thing so had to give it up.

The stir-fried bok choy described above is classic. A super-easy way to go is to make soup noodles and toss the bok choy and sliced meat (marinate first) into the broth as it comes to a boil.

I'm overwhelmed with excitement when going to the farmer's market lately. I see signs that read "Winter is over, fresh greens are here!" and it makes me so happy. This is a funny time of year for me...I find that all plans to cook at home go out the window when a friend calls to suggest fresh mojitos at the local cafe. I long for outdoor space and a grill, that would keep me at home more often. : )

I've been having a hard time motivating myself to heat up the house, but the CSA box keeps me moving - the veggies never stop, so I can't either!

I almost do not cook as my husband has very limited taste and so seems to have inherited from him our 2,5 year-old son:( Seems stupid to cook for myself and very often it is a waste too, because usually i can't eat all i've made. Have been trying to change my husbands' taste for 3 years now, but he is just too stubborn. He eats only makaroni and meat, no vegetables, no salads (only in hamburger), no fruits (only if he is sick he makes himself eat some oranges for vitamine c).
