No, that's not a typo. Greg and Michelle, the Culinary Sherpas, did make this concoction. Apparently, their cat approved.

They claim "the taste is a cross between custard, bacon, pancakes, and AWESOME!"

Does anyone else find these ice cream recipes to be ridiculous and annoying? Just give me a good vanilla or chocolate. Please keep the hoity-toity, showoff ingredients out. Goat cheese in ice cream... are you kidding??? I hope weird ice cream week ends soon!!!

Hey, it might be good. You never know until you try. Besides, the whole point of the Best Scoop contest is to be creative, isn't it?
Although I think I'll have to pass on the bacon/miso combo. Too much salt.

No, it's just you.
Though miso-maple bacon root beer...ugh. Of course, I hate bacon and root beer and maple is not a big, big fave, so...
I had miso peanuts once in Japan that were totally addictive, a little sweet, kind of like a beer nut. Now THAT would be an awesome ice cream flavor! Kind of like butter pecan crossed with those DQ sundaes with the salted Spanish peanuts? With a really great fudgy sauce...Oh drool...

No, it's not just you. I'm finding myself skipping reading The Kitchn more and more often, because I'm sick to death of ice cream. I'm close to throwing in the towel on this site completely.
I get that people like ice cream. But ice cream, like everything else, becomes tiring and unappealing when you're repeatedly, carelessly and ceaselessly exposed to it.
This bacon miso nonsense doesn't even strike me as having a chance of tasting good (I could be wrong, but I'm not taking the time to find out). To me it simply reads as, "Oh, look! An *original* ice cream idea!!" but lacks the creativity needed to make a quality product that still can please the inherently simple tastes of the average eater.

I have to agree, some of these ice cream combinations are so weird I don't even want to waste the $ buying the ingredients. I've tried a few of the more traditional ice cream entries which have been great, and even some of the more wacky ones but leaving out the crazy mix in/fixins. Overall I was hoping to find some new, easy, and accessible recipes to add to my summer repetoire but I think this might be sensory overload!

I'm a little tired of all the ice cream too... I would love some tomato recipes, though!

Wha-waaaa-what?
I so got to show this to my husband. He loves maple syrup. He loves miso. He likes bacon well enough when he slips up and eats pork. He LOVES ice cream and bourbon. Root beer is another thing on his favorite list too. He may love this.

There are tons of websites and cookbooks out there that offer recipes that are easy and straight forward. If that's what you want, they're easy to find.
Personally, I like hearing about the not-so-ordinary recipes ... even the extreme recipes like this one. Will I ever make it? No way! But the thought that somebody else did makes me giggle. What's wrong with a little culinary tomfoolery? I bet there was a lot of laughter in Greg & Michelle's kitchen on the day they decided to whip up this preposterous concoction. What's so bad about that?

Greg actually concotted this little ditty for two reasons. One, he wanted to show me how to make ice cream without an ice cream maker and two, he had been on a maple-miso kick. It started with maple-miso scallops that he created in our test kitchen. He is a working chef and has to play around to keep it fresh and innovative.
We're not big ice cream people or sweet people for that matter, but this was a lot of fun to create and really does taste like pancakes. The ice cream is a custard base, add a little maple and bacon, voila pancakes. The miso kind of gets lost.
As for Fisty The Cat, it's all true. He was very interested in tasting this float when I was snapping shots. So much that I couldn't get a shot without him in it.
If fancy shamncy ice creams are your bag, follow the recipe for just the ice cream. We wrote the recipe so that you could add any flavor you wished. Me, I'm a straight up chocolate girl.
Thanks Kitchn for the feature! We're happy you found us!

It's not just you. I think this is the only ice cream post I've clicked on, and only because of the cat. But then I'm just not that into sweets so much, so this ice cream month is wasted on me. But I assume I'm just part of the minority in that regard.
Let's have a savory snack month next! :)

aargh-how can anyone not be into sweets? The bane of my existence! What is your secret?

Did Fisty get a taste?
view Pixie's profile
Why yes he did Pixie! And he LOVED it. Minus the bourbon, of course.

oh good...bet he liked that bacon cream.

that was bacon plus cream, but the plus sign didn't work.
