Look! Beautiful (and Cheap) Spice Storage Solution

2008_10_15-SpiceRack.jpgOne of our favorite blogs, The Traveler's Lunchbox, recently posted a marvelous spice storage solution.

We have the same problem as Melissa: most spice racks are far, far too small for our needs. Indian, Thai, and Chinese cooking can make your spice collection really grow outside the bounds of the normal 8-12 (or even 16) jar spice racks.

She found a good solution through a common vintage item easily available through eBay - and for far less than buying multiple spice racks. Want to see what she did? Visit the post and then tell us what you think.

That looks beautiful, but I fear that the 1" overhang would soon lead to a flailing-arms disaster as saffron, cloves, ginger, and peppercorns all fell to the floor and spewed their contents across the kitchen. Perhaps I can find a handy relative to replicate this with more depth to better fit the tins?

nadarine - you could always put velcro on the back of the spice tins and in the rack.

I have a vintage wooden "Big Shot Soda" crate turned on its side for a spice rack. It's got 24 cubbies. You can find similar ones at fairly silly prices online by googling "vintage wooden crate coca cola" or Pepsi or whatever bubbly beverage your heart desires. I see them in flea markets and antique malls for under $20 all the time, though. They are a little rustic for someone tuned into sleek/modern/ikea aesthetics, but they'll work in a slightly funkier, vintage-y setting.

I purchased metal tins from a wedding favor vendor on ebay and added magnets (Michaels) to the back. Easy!

I heart spices! I have been looking for ideal containers for my stacks of different spices, good thing I saw this post. Kitchen organizers like these are just perfect for my favorite spot in the house—kitchen! Thank you for this very handy post.
