Holiday Baking: Inspiration from Trader Joe's

2008_11_12-TJpiestuff1.jpgWanting to give you some inspiration for our Best Pie Bake-off, we headed over to Trader Joe's to see what they might have to spark your creativity. Take a look!

TJ's definitely has you covered for basics like flour, sugar, butter, milk, and eggs. If you're not in the mood to make your own crust, they have regular pie crusts and puff pastry in their frozen food section.

2008_11_12-TJpiestuff2.jpgFor fillings, we've always admired Trader Joe's jarred fruits for their selection and quality. These morello cherries, pears, or peaches would all make excellent pie fillings! Trader Joe's also has their own organic pumpkin pie filling.

2008_11_12-TJpiestuff3.jpgOf course, don't forget all their frozen fruits! We find that TJ's prices are often better than in the regular supermarket - between $2.99 and $3.99 for typically a pound of fruit.

2008_11_12-TJpiestuff4.jpgIf you're thinking of using nuts in your crust or filling, check out what Trader Joe's has to offer. Not only do they have a good selection of different nuts, but you can usually find them shelled or unshelled, whole or in pieces, and salted or plain.

2008_11_12-TJpiestuff5.jpgTrader Joe's also has lots of 'extras,' including a good variety spices, marscapone cheese, creme fraiche, and turbinado sugar for sprinkling on top. These are the things that can elevate your pie and let you make a recipe truly unique.

Yes! What a timely post. Tennessee just opened its first Trader Joe's on Friday, located in Nashville (a FIVE MINUTE WALK FROM MY HOUSE!!!). I am super excited, especially after reading this - can't wait to hit all of the specialty items!

Mmm. They also have really good crystalized ginger. An apple, cranberry, ginger pie sounds delicious. (Or maybe an apple cranberry pie with ginger chopped and added to the crust?)

Gah! I must stop thinking about this stuff! I'm at work and the only sweet things nearby are M&Ms and Snickers bars. And those aren't delicious pie.

Warning: Trader Joe's pie crusts = most boring crust ever.

Other stuff is pretty dang dee-lish!

Yes, scuuster, I share your excitement. Even though we live 20 minutes away, it is still quite exciting. I went there on opening day and it was a madhouse. I didn't care at all though since I finally got to see what all the fuss was about.

Their crystallized ginger is very yummy! Also I like their tomato sauce. It's the next best thing to the one I get at the farmer's market.
