Green Eggs: Food Tricks for April Fool's Day

2009_03_31-AprilFools.jpgAre you planning any April Fool's Day tricks or treats? We made a whole day of it last year, so we'll probably let it go this year (although...watch out! You never know...). But we still think that the kitchen is one of the best places to have a little fun on April Fool's. Here a look at some of our past April Fool's silliness, and a few new ideas too.

2009_03_31-AprilFools2.jpgThe "shrunken breakfast" from Martha Stewart is actually awfully cute. Just use cocktail toasts and quail eggs for mini eggs-on-toast:

April Fools' Trick: Shrunken Breakfast

It's definitely more appetizing than green eggs and ham, anyway!

How to make green eggs and bacon

We really do not like food tricks that lead to waste, like the old "salt in the sugar bowl" thing, or even colored milk — which generally gets thrown out. So unappetizing!

But here are a few more April Fool's ideas that are quite good to eat.

Bowl of Cereal - Actually a very good lunch!
More Fakeout Food Ideas - Like McDonald's "French fries" with "ketchup."

You can see all of our April Fool's fun from last year here too. Win a date with Jamie Oliver, put Rachael Ray on your backsplash, grow spaghetti, and culinary ghosts:

Happy April Fools Day 2008 From The Kitchn!

And in the end, if you just don't want to do anything silly, try a delicious rhubarb fool instead. It's a great way to welcome spring, no joke.

In a link at the bottom of that butterscotch pudding recipe in gormet, they had a recipe for lemon pudding served in an egg shell with a lemon curd "yolk." It really looked like a soft boiled egg! Way cool.

I made fake sushi rolls with fruit roll-up, rice krispy treats, and gummi worms. I believe I saw a picture of them here sometime. They're really cute and look like sushi, but not enough to actually trick anyone.

Make ice cream eggs by slicing a pint of vanilla ice cream and adding a scoop of mango sorbet for the yolk (credit goes to the Surreal Gourmet guy - I saw this on the food network 10 years ago).

This morning I added some yellow food colouring to the bottom of my husband's cereal bowl and then covered it with cereal. When he added the milk, it immediately turned yellow. At first he thought it was the cereal because it was banana flavored but then realised that it was just his by looking at mine, which was still white. It was funny and not at all mean.

This is ABSOLUTELY MY FAVORITE.... (not really cooking but definitely in the kitchen)

before you go to bed put a rubber band around the sink sprayer control... aim it where your beloved will be standing... and then REMEMBER!

DO NOT TURN ON THE WATER UNTIL YOU HAVE SPRAYED THE HECK ON YOUR TRUE LOVE!

... and run like crazy when they start yelling!
