Escapes: Emandal: A Farm on a River

2007_08_20-Farm.jpgEmandal is an organic farm in Northern California that offers retreats, vacations, and environmental education camps for groups and families looking to get out of the city. We love the idea of taking a vacation on a farm, and for us cooks, this would be a great place to gather inspiration for our own kitchens.

All the meals are served family-style, created from fresh organic produce grown right there on the farm. No mixes are used - everything is made from scratch. They bake their own bread, use eggs from their chickens, house-roast the coffees, and make their own jams and syrups. You're invited to help with farm work - berry picking, egg gathering, cow milking, exploring their organic garden.

And if you don't want to do farm chores on vacation, you can hike through the beautiful countryside, 140 miles north of San Francisco.

You can see their available visit dates at their website.

I went to camp at Emandal when I was a kid. It was a great time, though I remember being terrified of the chickens when I had to collect eggs!

Sounds pretty cool! Kind of reminds me of our local farm The Grove. It's mostly there for historical reasons, but you could visit and get freshly-made butter and fine produce, and eat a home-cooked meal!
