Best Spring Flowers for the Kitchen

2009_04_03-daisies.jpgRight now, it's raining outside that dirty kitchen window of ours. Even more reason to have a vase of flowers on the counter. Daisies are inexpensive and humble, but clustered together, they look pretty posh. And white, yellow, and green seem to be the colors we gravitate towards when we're buying flowers for the kitchen. Want more picks?

This isn't a new topic for us here at the Kitchn. We've given you little nudges before, telling you to go out and buy (or pick!) fresh flowers for the countertop or the dinner table. Of course, flowers are an emotional buy. Who are we to tell you that roses or hydrangea feel more "entry way" than "kitchen"? Buy what you love.

That being said, daffodils are probably our favorite for a kitchen. They are bright, cheery, and have a casual, just-pulled-from-the-garden (even if they aren't) feel. Trader Joe's is selling bunches of 10 stems for $1.29. We bought two bunches last week and had enough flowers to use in the kitchen, dining table, and the bedroom. Here are some daffodils on Sara Kate's table:

2008_09_29-Flowers.jpgOK, these sunflowers aren't technically spring flowers. They're more of a hot, bold, late-summer bloom. But they look so pretty on the open island in Robert and Elizabeth's Soulful Sterling Place:

2008_6_06-Tour.jpgWe think of tulips as winter flowers, but there are local, New York-grown ones for sale at Whole Foods right now. They have that same casual feel as daffodils to us. Here's some from the popular Teeny IKEA Kitchen we showed you a few days ago:

Then there are the daisies we showed you at the top. Anyone can find daisies, right? Every deli in New York has them. Just goes to show that you don't have to get fancy to give your kitchen a lift.

I also bought the $1.29 daffodils at Trader Joe's this week! Last week when they were a whopping $1.99 I only bought one bunch, but this week I "splurged" on two bunches--what a lush bouquet 20 daffodils make. I love how they brighten up my dining table. Bought them Monday morning, and they are still going strong today...

If you are in Canada and want some beautiful cheery daffodils for your kitchen, we are now into daffodil days to support the Canadian Cancer Society! Please buy some daffodils from volunteers throughout your community (you will see them selling bunches of flowers in malls and other public places). Your flowers will be all the more lovely for representing a good cause!

(Also, they do smell lovely ;)

I guess this is one area where I'm showing my southern roots, but I just don't get calling those flowers daffodils. They've always been jonquils to me. They are very nice in the kitchen though, and very springtime. In fact, I picked some for my grandmother a few days ago and put them on her kitchen table.

I like hydrangeas in our kitchen, but our kitchen is a large enough space for them. They can look rather big in a smaller space, especially when the stalk is left longer.

I also like lilies, peonies, irises, and lilacs. And the leaves and blooms from a mimosa tree (an albizia, technically) are nice too.

I never actually buy flowers though, and I don't really care for them as gifts. If they make it inside, they probably came from the backyard.
