Nerdy bakers have a particular reason to love March 14th. Tomorrow's date, 3/14, resembles the mathematical constant of pi (3.14159). And what better way to celebrate pi than to make pie?

Today we're making pies to share with workmates tomorrow. We're thinking of a basic apple, and a more adventurous chocolate one, which together will please a variety of palates. But since Pi Day is an invented holiday, there are few rules, so feel free to celebrate with a savory onion pie, a quiche, or even a tart.

Here are some recipes to help inspire you:
Ginger Pumpkin Pie with Graham Cracker Crust
Bittersweet Cherry Pie
Corn and Bacon Pie
Chocolate Pear Chocolate Tart
Dorie Greenspan's Lime Cream Meringue Pie
Will you celebrate Pi Day tomorrow?

Sweet, maybe I'll whip together a tart tonight!
Four years ago, one of my friends made up The Winter Festival of Pie. Every winter, she hosts a "pie-luck," and all the guests are asked to bring a sweet or savory pie, quiche, tart, or pizza. This event gets bigger every year, and people get more creative. Made-up holidays inviting pie-making are a good, good thing. =)

Thanks for the reminder! My math teacher husband had volunteered me to make a pie for school tomorrow...almost forgot! =)

I'm making mini Key lime pies! I bought a bag of incredibly fragrant Key limes yesterday and although juicing them will be annoying, I know the end result will be well worth it!

What a fabulous holiday... it's maple-sugar season here in VT, so I'm thinking a maple pumpkin pie is in order. Especially since I won't be as excited about pumpkin when spring rolls around, this seems like ideal timing!
