Are You Persuaded By Pretty Packaging?

We'll be the first one's to admit we have a severe weakness for well designed packaging for our food and beverage products. We shop local farmers markets and support CSA's in our area, but inevitably new, brightly colored products with fun type treatments end up in our cart when we hit the store...

Maybe it's the design nerd in us, or just our love for testing out new products, but either way, we might as well have the world "sucker" tattooed on our forehead. After a few decades of packaging that was full of catch phrases (new, great taste, more/less *insert nutritional quality here*), companies are starting to clean up their act. Packaging is becoming more and more a pleasure to look, at as solid colors and shapes or a more clean aesthetic seems to be all the rage. Are you a packaging fanatic? Or are we the only ones?

Check out 7 new package designs featured over at The Dieline that will hopefully be coming to a store near you soon!

Oh, god. This post could have been written by me. My roommate and I have this conversation at least once a week, definitely every time we're in Target. I wouldn't pay more for packaging, but the Target brand of many things has gotten pretty adorable, and it's cheapest! Other than that, though, I'll admit that I choose the cutest packaging when several of the same products are similar prices. And I definitely notice when food places or stores have cute designs on their logos. Packaging counts!

Yes. Before I had even looked to see what Yummy is, I wanted it. I generally manage to stifle these urges before they come to monetarily exchanged fruition.

However, yes--pretty packaging make me want things.

This reminds me of the ESTY post a few days ago with the colorful, new items for the kitchen. Pretty packaging and design sell products.

pretty, reusable packaging always makes its way into my bag. i love seeing jars and bottles back in the pantry, refilled with rice, pasta, and other goodies.

I've suffered from this condition for as long as I can remember but only just realized it after taking a Packaging Design. Speaking of packaging, I've seen so much creative packaging this month due to Halloween being in a few weeks. For example, a fruit punch drink that was in a container shaped like a blood bag/iv drip bag; so fun! Fiance had to drag me away! Has anyone else seen any great finds recently?

Oh and @BrooklynBaker: I agree, I agree, I agree. Target definitely knows how to be attractive.

I definitely do!

BUT while the Evian bottle is pretty and I would keep it to use as a vase, I cannot bring myself to buy bottled water unless it is the only option for clean drinking water.

On the other hand, the packaging on the mixers could break my not-pre-made mixer rule!

I definitely do, especially on guilty pleasure items like Ice cream, choclate, and wine. I probably wouldn't care if my Clorox came in pretty packaging, in fact, I would probably be annoyed if it were harder to find.

It definitely depends on the item but I would say more times than not, guilty as charged as well.

I am totally guilty.

Guilty also. Who can deny wanting to make everything around you beautiful? My husband saw those new fancy M&Ms the other day and said he wouldn't mind having those sitting around in a large bowl. Nothing like aesthetics!

Oh, the packaging totally persuades me. Not only the designs, but also the packaging material. My excuse is that I'm studying graphic design, so I have to study the product's design as well. Whilst eating it.

... Right?

Oh yes, but I find those ice cream pints unappetizing. Especially the drooly one.

I had a funny (though non-food related) incident of packaging selling a product just the other day.

I needed a new DVD player, and was hemming and hawing with my sister in Best Buy. Within a price range, there were 6 DVD players with similar features: this one in Energy Star compliant, but that one is 10 bucks less, and so on.

After a quick look at the packaging, I said, "this one has a carrying handle. Sold."

The yummy containers are cute, but the color with the tiny slightly darker dots make me think of band-aids. So I don't know. But deep down I'm a penny pincher, so if it's cheaper, I'll prob. go for that one.
