Good Product: Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup

2008_07_25-WildHibiscus.jpgOne product we're really loving this summer is this jar of wild hibiscus flowers in syrup. They're meant to be added to a glass of white wine or champagne, and add a refreshing sweetness to the drinks.

Best of all, the flower is edible and can be used in other cocktail variations! The flowers come from Australia and can be found in specialty stores, or online. The product website lists a bunch of recipes here.

Buy it online at Amazon for $11.

They also make a great addition to martinis! Though I'd suggest only having one... all that sweetness and you're bound to be sick the next day!

You can also buy dried hibiscus flowers at Trader Joe's for a fraction of this price - my roommates and I went on a champagne kick after buying a pack.

THe flowers taste like a fruit roll-up. Honestly I wanna use the syrup in a cake.

I bet this stuff is amazing. If you ever get the chance, try hibiscus tea, also known as karkade, which has the most beautiful color and just-sweet-enough flavor.

you can get the dried hibiscus petals in latino stores. It's Jamaica (pronounced hah-my-kah)

As noted above, while silly yuppie white people pay $11 on Amazon for this stuff, Latinos have been using dried hibiscus (or jamaica) to make hibiscus tea and syrup for ages. Go to any decent sized bodega or Latino greengrocer and you can get dried hibiscus in bulk for CHEAP and make tea or syrup at home for a fraction of the price.
