Morris Grassfed Beef

2008_08_15-MorrisBeef.jpgSouth of San Francisco and San Jose, near Hollister, is the Morris Grassfed Beef Ranch. They're another local Bay Area rancher that allows customers to buy directly from them.

Like Marin Sun Farms, Morris Grassfed cows are 100% organic and free-range.

Morris Grassfed's beef selling procedure is very different from what most people are used to. First of all, they only sell their product once a year, in June, at various pickup locations in the Bay Area. Secondly, you have to buy what they give you, which will be between 80 to 100 pounds of beef in various cuts. The cuts that come in a package (called a "split half") can look like this:

  • 15 lbs pounds steaks (one - two pound packages)
  • 17 lbs roasts (2.5 - 4 lbs)
  • 35 lbs pounds ground beef (1 lb. packages)
  • 11 lbs chuck and round steaks (1.5 – 2 lb. packages)
  • 7 lbs stew meat (1 lb packages)

You will need 4.5 cubic feet of freezer space to store your meat, which will be enough to feed a family for a year. If you are single or a couple, you can invite your friends to come in with you on the purchase and split it up. A split half is the equivalent of purchasing one-third of a cow. When you make your order in advance, you can also specify if you'd like the bones, tongue, or organs.

If you don't have a huge freezer to store all this meat in, they offer the option to participate in the CSA-style split half. This option breaks up your 90-lb purchase into three different deliveries spaced four months apart.

Hollister is now in the Bay Area? I always thought of that as Central Coast!
