Seasonal Spotlight: Tomatoes Are Here In San Francisco!

2008_06_18-Tomatoes.jpgAt the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market last week, we saw tomatoes.

Yes, we know ... everyone's worried about salmonella in tomatoes right now. These tomatoes were grown locally in California, by small organic farmers, and are not among the contaminated tomatoes.

We can't believe it's summer already; the spring went by so fast. We aren't complaining, though; we can't wait to get our hands on some green fryers and make fried green tomatoes, or some fresh heirlooms to toss with some burrata cheese and olive oil. Yum!

By the way, did you know tomatoes are actually a fruit and not a vegetable? And did you know tomatoes originated in South America, where they were cultivated by the Incas? They were brought over to Europe in the 16th century and didn't grace Italian plates until then, so the ancient Romans never had marinara sauce.

Soft white bread, Duke's mayo, and big ol' slabs of tomato. Best thing in the world.

Ooh, how I miss the farmers' markets in San Francisco!!! Those tomatoes look fabulous. My host father in Israel used to make pita sanwiches with a thin slice of an omelet and a fresh tomato. Salt & pepper, and you are set!
