As summer begins to wind down, farmers are picking the last of the stone fruits off their trees and getting ready to harvest apples. Right now there's a glut of last-chance stone fruits in the farmer's markets. One such stone fruit is the pluot.

Pluots are a recently developed hybrid that are a cross between a plum and an apricot. Specifically, they are ¾ plum and ¼ apricot in terms of percentages. They look more like a plum, but are softer and sweeter like an apricot. Due to their speckled skin, they're sometimes called "dinosaur plums."
They have a very intense taste and are delicious. Give them a try! Trader Joe's also sells dehydrated pluots.

I bought some pluots the other week out of pure curiosity. They were great, but I wished there was a little more apricot in the mix....

I must have had very bad luck with pluots. The outsides are lovely, but the flesh near the stone in the ones I've had has always been mealy and bland.
