Seasonal Pairing: Peaches and Tomatoes

2009_08_03-peaches.jpgPeaches and tomatoes – it wouldn't be summer without them, but up until recently, we'd never eaten them at the same time. Hurrah for new taste discoveries! The golden sweetness of ripe peaches and rich, tangy flavor of heirloom tomatoes are wonderful together. Have you ever tried this combination?

We first tried this pairing after reading an article in The Guardian on "The 100 easiest, fastest recipes" for summer, and it's true – a salad of peaches and tomatoes, plus a little fresh basil, oil, and a crack of black pepper is a ridiculously simple but uniquely flavorful summer recipe. Here are a few other peach and tomato recipes we've found, and we'd love to hear your take on this combination!

Garden Greens with Yellow Tomatoes and Peaches, from Bon Appétit
Minted Peach and Tomato Salad, from Martha Stewart

Yes! I've just discovered this combination as well, it's fantastic! My current favorite also involves adding good, fresh mozzerella, basil and just a bit of balsamic & olive oil. Delicious!

I agree with the fresh mozzarella. I actually just picked some up today to put with peaches and basil. Maybe now I'll try tomato, too!

I had been thinking about making a sorbet with this flavor combo but had convinced myself I was crazy until I saw the pork and compote recipe in Gourmet. Now I'm going to have to try both!

I just made a peach and tomato salad last week and it was incredibly good. I got my recipe from Mark Bittman's 101 Simple Salads that was in the New York Times recently. I mixed it with sliced red onions and cilantro, and dressed it with just lime juice and olive oil. It was great! You can read more on my blog:

This is my favorite summer combination. I've used them in panzanella, salads and crepes (with squash blossoms &/or cave-aged cheddar or feta). My favorite take thus far is a grilled peach-tomatillo salsa:
