In the middle of all the chocolate and baking madness, the thing we are enjoying most right now are sweet, sweet clementines. We love how their thin jackets just pop off to reveal child-size slices of orange goodness.

We've considered making Clementine Cake or Clementine Clafoutis and we may get around to each eventually, but right now we're just enjoying the sweet fruit, cold from the fridge.

There were freshly baked clementine cakes at Abraco Espresso (7th st and 1st ave, Manhattan) when I was there on Monday. They were extraordinary. I also had a really good cardamom and rose cake.

what exactly is a clementine - how does it differ from a mandarin orange? My local grocery stores don't stock them.

My sister and I went through heinous amounts of clementines when we were kids - I still have 2 or 3 a day during the winter. They're such a perfect snack! My new citrus discovery is pink grapefruit... I never liked dealing with cutting all the segments and using all the special tools, but since I realized that you can peel and eat them like an orange, I've really been enjoying them!

I was "Uncle of the Century" a few years back when I fashioned a few clementine candles at the Thanksgiving table. My nieces were awestruck. I'll be making gluten free, casein free clementine clafoutis next week.

i am giving Clementines the credit for not getting sick so far this winter. Too bad in chicago grocery stores they are starting to get soft.

I grew up on the West coast and we always had satsuma mandarins instead of clementines, which I never saw until I moved out here. I still eat my bodyweight in satsumas when I'm home at Christmas--they are so much better than any clementines I've ever had; the skin comes off much more easily, there aren't seeds (usually), they are sweeter... I saw satsumas on the east coast for the first time ever a few weeks ago at Trader Joe's and bought them in triumphant disbelief but they were already nearly past their prime, very disappointing.

Just discovered satsumas here this winter. Seems like the skin feels loose with the fruit deep inside it (?) but the ones I saw last night seemed old and dried out. disappointing because the satsumas did seem better than Clementines. I love Clementines and that oil lamp is a great surprise to make.
