Apple Chips: Five Delicious Uses

2009_11_10-applechips.jpgHow are you enjoying the abundance of apples this season? Alongside the fifteen apple recipes we featured yesterday, we have been making batches of apple chips. Most of them are destined for snacking, but here are five other ways we like using apple chips to add a bit of natural sweetness and autumnal flair.

Oatmeal: Sweet but not sticky, apple chips are perfect for office drawers and DIY instant oatmeal mixes.

Soup: Use apple chips to garnish soups such as butternut squash, carrot, sweet potato, or celery root.

Salad: Make a green salad more interesting with the addition of apple chips, toasted nuts, and cheese.

Dessert: Apple chips make great seasonal dessert garnishes. Try them with autumn ices or baked persimmons.

Tea: For a lightly sweet drink, steep one or two apple chips in a mug with hot water and a cinnamon stick. You can also add black tea, cloves, and honey.

I might serve them as an appetizer topped with some blue cheese spread, a drizzle of apple cider reduction, and a spiced nut.

Or as dessert as a vehicle for Chow's Tiramisu Dip.

I've never made one, but I hear that rehydrating apple chips & then using them to bake an apple pie makes for an intense appley taste.

How long do these apple chips last in the pantry?

caeebe, I just finished a big gallon ziplock bag that I dehydrated 6 months ago. They were great, though slightly less crispy. I also had a batch of pear chips I made at the same time that didn't last as long; they didn't taste as good after 3 months or so.

Apple chips are sugar free?

Wunami--I'm thinking they aren't actually sugar free because of the natural sugar present in the apples, but they do not have additional refined sugar.

@wunami I meant added/refined sugar free, but point taken and I've changed the wording.

Ah, thanks for the garnish recommendation. I am making apple tarts with buttermilk ice cream for a housewarming party this weekend...I think putting one of my apple chips in the ice cream scoop would look cute!

I recently found a Danish shop in London (where I live) that sells apple chips. They are the size of small potato chips bags. I love that they are only apple--no funny additives. What a great potato chip substitution for days when I am craving a crunchy snack.
