In the world of specialty coffee roasters, Stumptown Coffee is its own superstar.
Since their beans are a rare find outside the Pacific Northwest, the owner's plan to open a coffee roastery Red Hook, New York is real cause for celebration!
Last week, the New York Times reported that Duane Sorenson, owner of Stumptown, has left his home turf in Portland, Oregon for Brooklyn, New York. In addition to running the roastery, he will be opening cafes in both Red Hook and Manhattan (29th and Broadway).
One of Sorenson's longstanding policies with Stumptown was to keep the beans local, and with very few exceptions, he only sold to businesses within driving distance of their Portland or Seattle roasteries. This move to open a new roastery in Red Hook opens up the East Coast market--and gets a hallelujah from all the Northwest transplants living in New England!
Don't fret for Portland, however! All the Stumptown roasteries and cafes in the Northwest will stay open while Sorenson pursues this venture on the opposite coast.

Stumptown is simply divine. Though I am a tad sad to see it become a nationwide thing, I am happy that when I go to NYC I'll be able to get Pacific NW worthy brew!

I would like to be a fan since I've heard so many good things.
The key to this whole thing though is that they're not just selling the beans to someone in New York, they are actually going to set up shop roasting, training and serving.
Anyone can grind and brew someone's beans but places like Stumptown need to control the process from source to cup.
If Intelligentsia ever sets up shop in NY I think people would be pleased with their operation as well.
This is all very exciting to me because if enough of these small yet very successful roasters continue opening and operating across the country people will have more of an alternative to the mermaid they are so used to.

When I lived in Minneapolis, Intellegentsia were our favorite beans; now that I live in Seattle, Stumptown's are in our daily brew. In fact, the beans pictured above are the kind my partner and I love. Truly delicious.

Since my husband started roasting our beans, this is the only other coffee we enjoy, and happily. Last time we were in Portland for 4 days and drank 14 cups.
