Koozies get a bad rap of being nothing more than foam billboards for catchy sayings about beer, babes, and football. Well, we love them and have an impressive collection. Some are downright classy, too.

I actually carry a koozie in my purse at all times. If I get on the subway with a can of Diet Coke, I like the fact that I can hold it without my hands getting covered in condensation (or getting cold), and that's not even counting that the koozie is doing its job—keeping my drink chilly all the way to my destination.
Yes, I get funny looks. But I like to think that those looks melt into a gaze of admiration and understanding because, really, it's a good idea.
And you can't deny the benefit of having koozies at an outdoor barbecue. They keep bottles and cans cold, and despite the fact that they're made out of a foam that I'm sure isn't eco-friendly, they eliminate people using multiple napkins wrapped around their beers to keep from getting their hands wet.
If you're worried that the only koozies on the market have a college mascot or a Nascar symbol on the side, take heart: I've been to several weddings in the past few years that had personalized, monogrammed koozies at parties. (A popular phrase to print: "To Have and to Hold and to Keep Your Beer Cold.") There are many websites that will print custom koozies with anything you want.
So, anyone else a koozie addict? Are you pulling yours out for the 4th of July?

I remember as a kid my Dad would use his all the time and I had a bright pink one. I found some of them last summer and used it while I had a can of soda open. I haven't seen really anyone use a koozie in like over 10 years. It's nice to see them again. :)

We actually gave beer Koozies out as presents at our wedding 2.5 weeks ago. The rehersal dinner was wings and PBR tall boys, everyone loved them!

By far, my favorite Mardi Gras throw...right up there with "carnival crystal" (a.k.a plastic krewe cups).
I was at an outdoor cooking class and a fellow classmate offered me his spare koozie for my Abita - a modern New Orleans take on the gentleman giving a lady his clean handkerchief! :-)

I don't understand apartmenttherapy's green philosophy. Post after post will extoll the virtues of going green then you have a post like this, which basically says "I'm sure the plastic foam is bad for the environment but screw it"
Why not spend some time on the web finding green alternatives?

I've never seen people waste tons of napkins wrapping their cans. What's so awful about getting your hands damp?

I'm with you alexis -- can anyone give us a good alternative?

I would guess that, like the re-usable coffee holder things, someone is making a similar-material koozie.
Etsy? for example...

We reuse glass bottles for water instead of plastic bottled water, and we use koozies to cushion the bottles from breaking in case it drops.

heck yeah. I love my koozie!

You probably get funny looks because you're not supposed to eat/drink on the subway?

We have a great "Play Like a Champion Today" koozie that rolls up on itself. My husband has quite a collection.

My husband has made me a koozie convert. They are great for casual outdoor events.

Apartment Therapy had a post talking about handmade drink cozies (the alternative to styrofoam) and people bashed them as ugly and pointless. No one is ever happy.

My husband & I are totally addicted to koozies (I keep one in my purse too!). We recently moved to California & our friends constantly poke fun at us for our obsession. They've finally written it off as a "Texas thing." Glad to know we're not the only ones!

Koozies are required for drinking on the boat at my parent's cabin. I'm going to get them some personalized ones for up there. This is great.

It's like I woke up one morning and these things went from Kozy's to Koozies. Oh well.
I have to commend you on your hard-core preparedness by having a kozy in your purse at all times. That's a step further than a bottle opener on the key chain.
Kozy's = fun in the sun.

I keep a few around, and they see occasional use, but I've never bought one. My all-time favorite is the one I picked up from the Lebowskifest (the original one, in Louisville) two years ago. It's bright orange, has the couple of requisite logos, and the immortal phrase, "Careful, man, there's a beverage here!"
Good times.

I had never really given them another thought until I moved from California to the South. They are EVERYWHERE down here! I've seen people bring them to restaurants, give them out during weddings, and keep large collections for parties. I think they're fine for cookouts and the like though I never think to use one unless offered one. My brother, still residing in California, detests them, calling them tacky and correction my pronunciation of them - ie my "koozie" to his "cozy." To each his own!

May I see an example of a "downright classy" one as I'm having a hard time imagining what it could possibly look like.

I didn't even know these things were still around until I moved from California to Texas. I thought they were some "thing" from the 80s! Anyway, I do have one now (I got it at some event at my college). I keep it at my desk, but I hardly ever drink anything from a can, so it is kind of pointless.
But about the environmental issue - they pretty much last forever, no? I'm sure you can pick one up at a thrift store and wash it, if you are concerned.

I’m of the opinion that koozies are green. Yes, koozies are made of foam but unlike Styrofoam cups or coolers koozies intended to be used over and over again. Paper napkins only work for one drink and then you have to use more paper. Some are pretty tacky but you still collect them and keep them around for parties, someone will use it. Koozies are like t-shirts, they commemorate an event and prove you where there. They bring back memories of parties, tailgating, hot summer days and long summer nights. They keep drinks cold and start conversations. You keep koozies until they are beyond use because sooner or later it will get used. I know more than a few girls who keep one in their purse. Koozies made of neoprene fold up nicely in a back pocket. I keep a few in my car along with a couple of folding chairs because you should always be prepared.

That's a stubby holder! Here in Australia you'd be hard pressed to find a house without a number of them. They're such day to day objects it seems strange to think people would have them as wedding presents!

Yeppers---koozie or kozy, we in Texas hold on to them for years. We take our beer-drinking seriously (cheers to Minnesota/Wisconsin---y'all give us a good run though).
