Product: LaLoo's Goat's Milk Ice Cream

2006_12_04LaLoos.jpgI admit I'm I bit of a sucker for eye-catching labels. Whilst strolling thought the frozen foods section at Bristol Farm's the other day, the label for LaLoo's made me pause. I opened the case and examined the container. It turned out LaLoo's ice cream is made with goat's milk. I was intrigued. The flavor I held in my hand was equally intriguing - Black Mission Fig. Despite the slightly steep price (upwards of $7 for a pint) I had to give it a try. Never having eaten ice cream made with goat's milk, the flavor was surprising and unique - light and creamy with a bit of a tang, which is balanced by the spicy sweetness of the fig. It was truly unlike any ice cream I've ever eaten.

Founded less than a year ago by a Los Angeles entertainment executive with an interest in eating healthy, LaLoo's is based out of Sonoma, California, where as their website boasts, their goats get to roam a 350 acre farm "where they graze on green grass and thistleberry in the warm Pacific breeze." It apparently makes for some pretty great ice cream. Other flavors include Vanilla Snowflake, Pumpkin Spice, Deep Chocolate (which uses 77% Scharffen Berger cacao), Molasses Tipseycake (molasses ice cream with chunks of oatmeal cookie), Lemon Chiffon (made from farm fresh Chevre and Meyer Lemon), and Chocolate Cabernet.

The ice cream is lowfat, low in lactose which makes it easier to digest than cow's milk, and contains no growth hormones. You can find LaLoo's at various gourmet and health food stores all over the country including Whole Foods, although they also offer mail order through their website.

yes! another goat product to add to my growing goaty obsession!
So far I'm addicted to: goat yogurt, goat cheese, goat butter (great on no-knead bread!) and goats milk!
the last two combined make really unique, utterly delicious mashed potatoes.
Thanks Grant!

I love goats milk too, I will have to look for this at WF. I'd love to try the Deep Chocolate if I find it - when we were in San Francisco our hotel left yummy Scharffen Berger chocolates on our pillows each night. The Vanilla Snowflake flavor sounds intriguing too, I wonder if it tastes like snow cream.

This company also makes a frozen yogurt, I had to ask for it at my store here in Santa Monica, but it has only 4 grams of fat and boasts live active cultures which is pretty amazing for something so loaded with brownies! oh, the flavor has a cute title too: Brownie and Clyde!
