Hot or Not? Slicing Guide

2009_05_27-Slicer.jpgThis slicing guide is a product that we instinctively feel like we should ridicule. What a unitasker! And yet we are so uncoordinated that our tomato slices often come out either wispy or chunky — and don't even talk about our bread slicing clumsiness. Precise slicing is definitely an area of growth for our knife skills. So perhaps this has some guilty merit. But then again, maybe you could hack this with a large carving fork? What do you think?

I think it's rather silly, but I'm always wary of slicing that last chunk of tomato for fear of cutting myself... maybe this would be easier.

I want to vote "Not!" but my left thumb, which I cut yesterday, is telling me to vote "Hot!"

My mother-in-law has a similar tool and uses it for perfect little tomato slices. I agree it seems silly, but if you entertain a lot it might actually be quite handy.

I usually make a mess of slicing, so I gave it a try, but I found it awkward to use and still made a bit of a mess (but that's probably just me).

I think that a mandolin slicer would work better for things like tomatoes and lemons -- and it wouldn't work on large loaves of bread which is what I'd need it for. I don't have anything against slicing guides, but I'm not sure I'd buy this one.

@mlleErica, a mandolin will butcher tomatos, I can tell you that from personal experience. I've never been able to get mine sharp enough to not tear them apart.

I want to say "NOT!" because it seems silly but slicing tomatos is kind of a pain, especially since I tend to slice diagonally with a serrated knife. Practice has let me get nice, evenly fine slices of naked lemons, though, so maybe that's what it would take rather than a gadget.

I couldn't get the vote button to work after following the directions, but I'd add HOT because I love the idea of not slicing up my fingers or finger nails and getting perfectly sized slices. It seems to hold the meat nicely also, which would be a plus when it is hot.

The only NOT point is that I don't have room to store it, which really is the problem with all unitaskers that actually get the job done.

Not.. just work on your knife skills and keep your knives sharp.

These tools also lock you into certain slice widths... good skills let you slice as needed.

This looks awkward. I loathe slicing tomatoes so my friend bought me a tomato slicer from Target that's sort of like an egg slicer without the hinge. It works pretty well.

While gadgets like this often incite dismay from serious cooks who work on techinque and knife skills, they are actually very useful for people who have mobility issues.

I have several family members who have range of motion issues with their hands and this gadget can really help them to cut fresh food safely. So don't be too quick to dismiss an item like this...

We had something like this (a little larger) for slicing our homemade bread. It was nearly impossible to get sandwich sized slices without it. I don't slice lemons often enough to care, but it would also be great to not have to get the acidic juices all over my hands (and hangnails).

I wouldn't buy one, but I like the concept so I voted Hot.

After working with a caterer for a while, I learned some good cutting/chopping techniques, but I still tend to make a mess of tomatoes. And I think if you are using the tomato/lemon in nicely presented meal, it would be great to give everyone uniform pieces.

I voted Not because I'm not into unitaskers and gadgets. I would buy it for my brother for Xmas though--he and his wife have every kitchen thingy-do made (and a kitchen half the size of my entire apartment).

Funny--I'm always saying I need to work on my knife skills, but the fact is, I can evenly slice tomatoes, lemons, bread, etc., without stress, so I'm going to give myself 10 points. I'd love to be faster, but I guess I'm not too bad.
