How To Make Hollow Sugar Easter Eggs

2009_04_10-SugarEggs.jpgWow! We always thought that these hollow sugar Easter eggs were only made by trained craftsmen or elaborate machinery. Who knew that you could make them at home? Did you ever get one of these for Easter? These eggs with ornate sugar decorations and an intriguing little diorama inside were the most coveted Easter treat in our house. Here's how to replicate them yourself, with just a few basic ingredients.

 
 

2009_04_10-SugarEggs02.jpgElaborate sugar eggs, also called panorama Easter eggs, are a tradition that dates all the way back to the Victorians. This peek-inside Easter egg made from hard sugar and frilly decorations fit the Victorian sensibility very nicely. They still come around every Easter, and their pretty innards always captivate the children.

You can build your own, too, with some sugar and a couple of inexpensive plastic egg molds. Here are several tutorials:
