we're kicking it old school: burgers and dogs, veggie and not. i went overboard on the desserts, though: brownie fudge sundaes from david lebovitz' book and blueberry free-form pies.
grilled zucchini, boiled corn, tons of beer. no fireworks because of the fires though. we live up in the santa cruz mountains.

I somehow managed to get invited to the White House lawn to watch fireworks tomorrow ... but other than that sure-to-be-surreal experience, I'm just enjoying the long weekend!

Three barbecues to head out to and we're bringing deviled eggs to one (special request)...Otherwise, I'm sure we'll eat plenty of grilled goodies with beers poolside at each one!

Hoping that our home does not get burned by the GAP fire that is burning in the hills right behind us here in Goleta...Normally we would go to watch the fireworks at the Santa Barbara Harbor, but we intend to stay home in case of evacuation....

Working a pyrotechnics gig for the fourth, like I have for the past few years. The guy who heads the thing always puts together a BBQ that we eat onsite after we're done with setup. Nothing fancy, usually just ribs and potato salad and the like. One of the other techs and I usually do a midday popsicle run, as well.

We're keeping it cool and veg. coz it's so hot in the Valley. We got our Lemon-Mint water, Mint-Cucumber water, Orzo salad, cake and cider!

Since we moved to a lovely neighborhood in the south, our tradition is to head down to a neighbor's house at noon. Hot dogs for lunch, visiting all afternoon while the pork cooks on the barbecue and gets mopped with sauce all day. Then we set up lots of tables and bring our dishes down. I'm making coleslaw, a black bean and corn salad, brownies and slicing up a watermelon. Sparklers for the kids at dusk. This will be my husband's first 4th as a US citizen. Best wishes to those near the CA fires. Be safe.

Very low-key this year.
Picked cherries in my Mom's orchard, and afterwards we grilled venison burgers!

I know the 4th is over, but we went to Nashville's Hot Chicken Festival and sampled lots of different original Nashville hot chicken (for free!), and local brewery Yazoo beer (not free, $4 but free refills!).
