Winter Smoothies: 5 Seasonal Add-Ins

2010_01_07-smoothie.jpgWhile preparing our usual morning smoothie the other day (milk/yogurt + frozen berries + protein powder), we realized we were in a rut. Somehow, our love of diverse, seasonal ingredients had never been applied to smoothie making. In an attempt remedy things, here are five foods we're now adding to our winter smoothies. What are your favorite smoothie add-ins?

Avocados: One person in our household loves avocado smoothies, while the other is not a fan, but it's definitely worth trying if you haven't before.

Carrots: We can't make carrot juice with our regular blender, but we've found that a finely grated carrot works well in smoothies.

Citrus: Oranges, tangerines, and other citrus fruits are abundant this time of year, and we're using them more than berries now. We like mixing fresh juice and whole segments with yogurt, cardamom, and honey.

Ginger: Although ginger is technically not a winter crop, it adds a nice brightness to smoothies. We use about one teaspoon of freshly grated ginger per serving.

Leafy Greens: Trust us, a handful of kale, spinach, or chard is much better than it sounds, and of course it's super healthy. Apple juice or lemonade are good pairings.

MMM green smoothies are the best! I like adding kale to smoothies made with non-dairy milk, flax seed, strawberries, mango, and banana.

I add 2 cups of greens (such as spinach, chard, kale, or asian greens) and three fruits -- usually persimmon, pear, and apple right now. adding avos or nanas are great because they make the smoothy so thick & creamy. The boutenko blog & books have great recipes.

I like sweet tasting fruit smoothies with oat or soya milk the best. But we have also been experimenting with different kind of vegetables. One of the most healthiest thing we've added is broccoli, it actually tastes really good and is super healthy! Find the recipe here!

I often throw a whole carrot into the smoothie and it gets blended in with everything else. I like Avocado, ginger and banana together a lot! I also frequently add almonds to a fruit smoothie and sometimes add peanut butter if it will go well with the other ingredients. I haven't tried greens yet, but I will definitely keep that in mind!

I like a mixture of coconut water, spinach, banana, and berries. Lately I've been adding clementines. I highly recommend.

I have been making green smoothies for breakfast every day this week! I second the recommendation for Boutenko's recipes. I have the book "Green Smoothie Revolution."

romaine lettuce is also a good add-in – a little less, uh, grassy than some of the other leafy greens. spirulina gives a huge nutritional boost, but it can look a little scary and hard to get down if you put too much. i also like adding in dates and beets. not all together, of course.

i've also been experimenting with adding spices and fresh herbs. so far, i've liked basil, lavender, galangal and tumeric.

Green smoothies rock! I like spinach and kale in mine though kale is kind of bitter. It pairs well with a little peanut butter and banana or dark berries I've found.

...gotta try carrots--I like that idea.
