Monday Morning Detox: What Do You Eat or Drink After a Gluttonous Weekend?

2009_04_20-oj.jpgWe had a weekend full of fried food, mindless snacking, and a road trip stop at Waffle House. We know you've been there, too, waking up on Monday morning with a craving for salad (for breakfast). How do you make a fresh start? We're not interested in a fast, necessarily, or an extreme juice diet, but we're game for some ideas...

The most obvious for us would be to cut out meat for the day, eat simple vegetables and fruits, and drink plenty of water. Grapefruit always feels refreshing on a morning like this.

On the other hand, Monday morning often finds us with empty cupboards—especially if we've been out of town. So we may be using up the last of some pantry stragglers, like a half-empty bag of quinoa or wheat berries. Maybe a quick stop at the grocery for something green will round out a meal.

What are your tips for "detoxing" after a weekend of heavy eating? Smoothies? Stir-fry? Let us know.

Fruit and plain yogurt.

When I feel a need a detox, I make a batch of veggie chili or something along those lines and eat it for a few days. I also make sure that I have a big tub of yogurt and granola available for breakfasts.

Whatever I can throw together for breakfast--today it's cottage cheese with a swirl of raspberry jam. Probably a salad for lunch, and then fish and veggies for dinner. There's always a bit of frozen fish in our fridge for this kind of Monday (and your weekend sounds amazingly like mine!)

If it was too much junk, I just do a fruits, nuts, and maybe cheese week. Pear and gorgonzola flat breads or salads. Roasted figs in honey with pine nuts. Maybe mix in a meal of sweet potatoes roasted with rosemary.

If it was too rich food, too much meat, too much whiskey, I'll do a bananas-rice-applesauce-toast week.

I tend to go for rice and veggies, with pretty simple spicing (garlic, soy, and szechuan sauce). Grapefruit, tomatoes, or granny smith apples with a little salt are always good, too.

A few days of a raw diet do the trick for me and I refrain from dairy and meat. Salad, lots of fruit, water and frozen fruit smoothies.

Go back to clean eating and reasonable portions. Fiber, fresh produce, water.

a green smoothie!

i like kale, spinach, fresh mint leaves, frozen pineapple, frozen peaches or mango, a splash of OJ, and lots of water.

blend it all up, drink it down, and you'll feel so healthy and refreshed.

Protein and veggies for breakfast such as eggs, spinach and peppers; a salad w/some fish or chicken for lunch and something similar for dinner. Usually a couple of days of heavy on the vegetables, fish and chicken and light on carb and red-meat heavy meals usually does the trick. Oh, and lots of water!

Second the kombucha. Plain yogurt, lots of veggies, steamed rice or quinoa, and lean protein like fish or tofu. Minimal salt, sugars, and oil/fats.

I like to eat okayu (rice porridge) with stir-fried bitter greens, like Chinese broccoli or rapini.

I went to a baseball game this weekend. Hotdog, popcorn, peanuts...oofta.

This morning I had a hot lemon water - no coffee. Drinking it before you eat in the morning cleans your liver and helps melt fat in your digestive system.

This morning I ate egg with guac and a gluten free pancake with almond butter. For lunch I ate kale with onions. I've been snacking on bell peppers. But for dinner I have a lamb chop marinating. :~)

I usually only do this around the holidays, but my cure is a "vegan cleanse". I'm a vegetarian already, but when I overindulge in any greasy, rich, creamy, sugary foods for a period of a couple days I usually go for a week cleanse... Which means eating vegan and no sugar, gluten, caffeine (which I don't do anymore because of this!) or alcohol.

I always feel so much better! And after big holidays like Christmas, I go for two weeks. :)

I've found that I automatically start craving salad, tons of water, tofu with steamed vegetables, and don't want to see anything heavy for a few days. There's really no thought involved and I eat whatever I feel like eating, which is inevitably not what I'd been eating over the weekend.

fruit smoothies, vegetable-laden stir fry, and whole grains always sound good after too many sweets. I also love to cook up some whole wheat pasta with a simple spicy olive oil sauce (heat olive oil with crushed red pepper and garlic or garlic salt) and spinach.
tons of water too, of course.

I also like grapefruit. I drink ruby red grapefruit juice with a sprinkle of beneful in it and feel much more virtuous in an instant!

my go-to meal (which is good any day, but especially when your digestive system needs cleaning) is a wheat berry salad. add some sauteed onions, chopped celery, dried cranberries, chick peas, walnuts, parsley, etc. and dress with some vinegar and lemon juice. it fills you up without feeling heavy and is full of fiber.

Although it makes us feel virtuous to consume all sorts of juice and herbs and air in order to feel virtuous, there's nothing that truly "cleanses" the GI system (other than dysentary). Want a silver bullet? Try water!

Green smoothies are yummy and light. I also drink loads of water and herbal teas. Usually if I'm feeling like this I try to listen to my body and only eat when I get hungry. After a week of potlucks I subsisted on water, a glass of fresh squeezed juice, and some kiwi for two days without thinking about it. After those 2 days, hunger kicked in again, and I managed to eat pretty clean for a few more days (until Easter chocolates reared their heads! And by then I was ready for it!)

Thank you pingarina! All of these ideas seem like they are just meant to make you feel less guilty and give the illusion of a "detox".

I love plain brown rice and vegetables after a heavy weekend. Lots of garlic, and lots of lemon water. I don't know if it actually "cleanses" your system, but I sure do feel better for it.

I don't know about detox, but a lot of these ideas will actually make you feel much better than just drinking water alone! I completely second brown rice, lemon water, and kombucha. I find kefir more refreshing than yogurt, though salt lassi can be a good meal replacement too, when another meal feels like too much of a good thing.
