Eating Light: Drink Herbal Tea Instead of Snacking

2009_01_09-Tea.jpgWe work in front of a computer (obviously) and the urge to snack all day is strong, especially in the cold winter. We've found that one of the best ways to combat the urge to graze is to drink herbal tea instead.

Actually, any sort of tea works, but we try to avoid caffeine in the afternoons, and herbal tea offers such a range of flavors and tastes that we are usually very satisfied by switching up our tea instead of snacking on an unending series of toast and jam.

It's so comforting, too, to wrap our hands around a hot, heavy mug of tea -- so warming and filling! We usually drink ginger and lemon teas, although we like raspberry, mint, and orange spice too. There is always the spiced rooibois chai from Trader Joe's (although we find rooibois to be something of a diuretic -- anyone else?) and decaf black tea too.

These hot cups of tea are often just enough to get us through a snackless afternoon to dinner time. Nothing wrong with snacking, of course, but when you work in front of a computer all day it's too easy to mindlessly graze. Tea helps to curb that, and of course tea is wonderful regardless of any health benefits.

What do you drink in the afternoons, and do you ever use hot beverages to replace a snack?

I do this too! Usually peppermint tea for me, but I love licorice tea, which can be difficult to find (You can get it in france...but I haven't been able to nail down a good US source)

My favorite "snack" tea is rosehip. It's tangy, which tends to suppress my appetite. Oolong tea and kukicha are favorites when I want a smoky or substantial taste (they both have caffeine, but very little). I love Earl Grey tea, really all black teas, but I associate those with the accompanying cookies, toast, or scones! So for the purpose of NOT eating, those don't work for me, although if a snack is planned, that's what I'll probably brew.

I love tea and my favorite online tea source is Adagio Teas. They have SO many varieties including chocolate chip tea! It's the best snack :) I drink herbal as well and the great thing about Adagio is that you can buy sample tins for usually $2 and see if you like the flavor before committing. Great post!

Weird, coffee is far more of a diuretic then any tea.

And now I really want a cup of fresh, hot tea. :-D Preferably black with a slice of lemon.

This really works, I've been doing it for two years! My pick in the afternoons is pomegranate green tea, it still has caffeine but it doesn't keep me up the way coffee does.

Hmmm, seems like I've heard of this before... in this other country called England. Still agree it's a great idea.

I love hot tea, too, but I am way too clumsy to have an open mug of anything near my computer. I prefer a bottle of water with a sport top. My current favorite is the Sunray design by Sigg, like this one but in red...

...and with the Active Bottle Top so that I won't spill it everywhere. Friends call it my "sippy cup".

For flavor, I add packets from Crystal Light or Lipton.

That is so funny to me to see this post. I have a bad snacking habit due to restlessness. Plus I work from home, so this makes it worse because I have my whole cupboard available. To curb the need to snack, I've been making myself herbal tea. I keep a whole variety of teas, and have no favorites in particular -- but usually spicy chai is the one I reach for.

I love licorice tea too! A long while ago Crabtree and Evylyn had a gift box sized package of Licorice mint tea that they sold, only five bags in it though and I can't find it anymore. I think it must be long discontinued.

Yogi Teas has a pretty decent licorice tea called Egyptian Licorice. They also have a licorice mint tea. I love the way that licorice in tea gives it a naturally sweet aftertaste/swallow. No sugar needed. Its also good for digestion!

Unfortunately, tea doesn't stop me from being hungry.

@ roselaw - if you like Yogi's Egyptian Licorice, try Aveda's Calming Tea. It's a pretty penny, but worth it for a treat once in a while! It's my favorite!

I used to love licorice tea, too! Tazo had a really good one, I think it was. I stopped being able to find it and there went my licorice tea breaks :(

a friend gave me aveda's calming tea for my birthday - what a great treat!

i drink copious amounts of tea - herbal, green, black, green, herbal (multiple cups of each, usually in that order, throughout the day). a lot of hot water with lemon, too. i have a zojirushi vacuum pot, so tea is as accessible as any packaged snack food. i love my pot, but it wouldn't make sense for most people.

hmm, is it possible to drink too much hot liquid?

I love tea and drink it all day long - black until noon, green until about 2:30 or 3:00 p.m., then I switch to herbal. My favorite herbal tea is "World Peace" from Teaism in DC. (Which is right across Dupont Circle from my office... sooooo dangerous.) World Peace has a great name, and it's delicious - the perfect blend of mint and cloves. I also love "Quiet Evening" from Teaism, but it's a bit of a misnomer when I drink it in the early afternoon in my hectic office.

I'm a big Genmaicha drinker, it helps me not snack (after dinner is my bad time) and soothes my tummy when it is upset. The brown rice gives it a nuttiness and makes it feel like I have something substantial in my belly!

I drink tea all day to keep me going and, in the winter, to keep me warm. Just made myself a cup of Tazo organic chai with a little bit of half and half. Yum!
