Me at the outdoor oven managing the fire and getting ready to cook up the pizzas.
While in Italy over the past two weeks we did a ton of cooking, a lot of it on a grill, and some of it in a big outdoor oven. Today to celebrate the end of Outdoor Month (Travel is next), I want to highlight three outdoor cooking designs: a very special outdoor oven and the little grill that I saw while staying for a week at a 17th century farmhouse in Chianti, as well as the grill in the USA that I crave (no gas, just real fire). Enjoy!
You start by getting the oven ready with a big fire in the middle of the day.
The oven was absolutely beautiful inside, and glowed when the fire was lit.
Here's a pizza going into the oven. I cooked them on the stones inside, but put them on the fire first because they were so wet they didn't slide off the peel.
The wood oven is to the left of this pic, and this shows the view while you are cooking.

This is the view from the grill. Those are grape vines and olive trees in the distance, with a huge fig tree in the right foreground.

Oh wow, that brick grill looks fantastic. My husband and I have been contemplating building a wood-fired grill in our backyard and seeing this has really given me the inspiration to get it done. Certainly looks simple enough to do, just need to find the right supplies!
