We had a grillfest extravaganza laid out last night at a family member's country house. There was a big gas grill all prepped and hot, and fish, sausage, and chicken ready to go on. We wanted to experiment with a few things and bring you back some recipes. Well, look what happened.
Rain on the grill! That's steam coming off the top. The water hissed and evaporated immediately as soon as it hit the fully-heated grill. It was really coming down - a true summer thunderstorm!
We abandoned our plans for extensive recipe testing, but we did test one recipe that we'll review for you a little later today. (It was a very successful supper!)
It also occurred to us, here in Grilling Month, that rain on the grill is not so uncommon, and perhaps it was good to test things under such realistic circumstances.
Have you ever grilled in the rain, and if so, what is your best method of dealing with it? We had a big umbrella...

i do the prep work while my husband does the grilling in the rain under an umbrella (a really huge one from Costco) We have a Big Green Egg and rain nor snow makes a difference to it.

heh. In Canada we even grill in the snow! You just need an overhang or covered porch.

Heck, at my dad's house in Maryland we grill outdoors in the open every year during Thanksgiving. An overhang or umbrella's probably good, but a raincoat will do just fine.

We don't even bother with an umbrella. My boyfriend usually goes out in his raincoat and watches over the food.
I'll BBQ in -40°C. BBQing is definitely not a 'summer only' cooking style. All year long!

I sometimes find that my grill won't light if it's raining out (or when it's crazy sticky humid). Is that a grill problem, or just me?

Angorian - I knew you were a Canuck when you mentioned the bags of milk. :)
Yeah, we bbq year round up here in Ottawa, Canada too. I remember having bbq steaks for Christmas dinner after losing power in the huge ice storm of 1986. Good times.

Nothing like Christmas turkey, straight from the BBQ. Frees up the oven for all the other goodies.
