Top 10 Holiday Uses for Wine Corks

2008_12_9-wine-cork-roundup.jpgHave you accumulated a supply of wine corks throughout the year? Possibly more rapidly now that holiday season is here? Here are some of our favorite festive – and green – ways to reuse them.

  1. Use Re-Nest's wine corks and salvaged wood as cork board to display holiday cards, or give as a gift.
  2. Make these stitched coasters or trivets from Design*Sponge or try this framed trivet. Great for holiday parties or gifts.
  3. Adorn little gift bags of mulled wine spice mix.
  4. Turn them into place card holders. We like AT: SF's version and Danny Seo's Champagne interpretation.
  5. Try some of these Christmas tree ornaments from Indie Fixx.
  6. Channel your inner molecular gastronomist with a cork and wire holder for a special dish. Perhaps the Pheasant, Shallot, Cider, Burning Oak Leaves from the Alinea cookbook?
  7. Adorn holiday cards with wine cork stamps.
  8. String together to make a garland.
  9. Create a kitchy reindeer decoration.
  10. Donate to a recycling program like Korks 4 Kids.

Funny you should ask! I have a friend that makes sculptures with them. Take a look: http://foodwoolf.com/2008/12/cork-sculptures-with-francesco-ferrario.html

What's the best tool to use for cutting synthetic corks? (Yeah, I drink cheap wine.) I tried a big butcher knife, but it didn't work very well.

Great little sculptures, and fun list! I really like the tiny stamps. I should put them in my compost--but have a hard time throwing them away . . .
