Tip: Compost Your Pumpkin

2007_11_01-Pumpkin.jpgHalloween is over - what are you doing with your jack-o'-lantern? Every November, millions of pumpkins are thrown away or left to rot.

Put your scary pumpkin to good use and put it in a compost pile! Earth 911 has some good tips on composting a pumpkin, and if you don't keep a compost pile ask around and see if your gardener friends do.

Your pumpkin could have a second life, helping grow more pumpkins for next year!

That's a great intention, but do not throw a whole pumpkin into a compost pile. In order to break down in a timely fashion, anything put into compost should be chopped up into small pieces (for example, a whole orange is too big). Also, wax should be removed from the inside.

My apartment complex composts Xmas trees--I wonder if they do pumpkins? There are 11,000 units after all. And we have 4 pumpkins. Small, granted, but 4. Anybody know of a New York City pumpkin drop off? (I know, it sounds ridiculous.)

Or, do like my neighbors and build a 14 foot high trebuchet and launch them in the air. Oh wait - that isn't really environmentally friendly. But it is delightful! You could always go pick up the pumpkin pieces afterwards and pop them into the compost pile, too. If you can find them...
