Chicago

2008_9_30-foraging.jpgIf you're interested in foraging for food in Chicago, but afraid to take the plunge on your own, Living Kitchen/URBANFORAGE has a few upcoming programs to help guide you in your search.

Living Kitchen/URBANFORAGE walks and cooking workshops are led by Nance Klehm, aka Salvation Jane, who explains that the group "aims to re-envision our connection to the land, ourselves and our communities through the processing and sharing of local and regional foods."

Upcoming events include:

10/19 Foraging walk (location TBA), 9-11a.m. By donation*

11/5 Workshop - Wild Sourdough and Crackers: Wild Starters, Bread and Cracker Making Basics, 6-9p.m., $60 ($20 mailed deposit due by 11/1)**

11/12 Workshop - Raw Milk Cheese 2: Mozzarella & Feta, 6-10p.m., $100 ($40 mailed deposit due 11/12)

* Workshops are held at 2446 South Sawyer, Chicago. Prices include all materials, tastings, light meal and take homes. If registration exceeds 10 people, classes will be moved to another location.

** Walks are not free. Cash is preferred, but other offerings are accepted, such as "a zine you've made, a bottle of raw milk or honey, homemade hooch or molé."

For more information, contact Nance at nettlesting@yahoo.com or 773-762-0277.

I would encourage anyone who is at all interested in learning how much of a treasure our wild areas are in Chicago to attend anything led by Nance.

She's a remarkable horticulturalist and forager. Experience a foraging walk while you can.
