Apple Picking Report

40 pounds of Rome apples. We braved chilly grey weather (not to mention the scorn of Daniel Gross at Slate - see the discussion here!) to go apple picking last week. These are Rome apple trees - Rome is a variety with strong Ohio roots and very crisp white flesh that is pink-tinged from its red skin.

Rome is our favorite all-purpose apple; they're sweet enough to eat but very firm and tart enough for baking.

When stored straight from the tree in a cool dark place these will keep for months.

We already made an apple bread pudding with a few of these, and ate at least four more outright. Recipes later this week...

Anybody know of any pick-your-own orchards that are within short taxi/bike ride from Metro-North? I've always wanted to do this, but never enough to justify renting a car.
