Good Quote: Thoreau on Popcorn

2009_01_07-ThoreauPopcorn.jpgWith more snow in the forecast for much of the east coast, this quote from Henry David Thoreau feels quite timely!

I have been popping corn tonight, which is only a more rapid blossoming of the seed under a greater than July heat. The popped corn is a perfect winter flower, hinting of anemones and houstonias....By my warm hearth sprang these cerealious blossoms; here was the bank where they grew.

How do you like your popcorn?

Popcorn is one of our absolute favorite snack foods just about any time of the year, though curling up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and a good book while it's snowy outside is a particular treat.

We usually just toss ours with a pat of melted butter and a few grinds of sea salt. If we're feeling in need of a little extra pizazz, we toss in a few pinches of dried herbs, cumin and chili powder, or even some freshly ground black pepper. We also discovered nutritional yeast back in our college days - it gives popcorn a slight cheesy taste without resorting to the fake powder stuff.

What about you?

My friends call me a popcorn snob. It is absolutely my favorite snack--healthy, cheap, easy. My favorite kind is Amish Red Popping Corn, popped in a Whirlipop with a little bit of corn oil. Microwave popcorn tastes like salted cardboard after that, and even the kernels you can get at the grocery store have no flavor in comparison. Amish popping corn is slightly sweet and nutty and I could go on and on.

I too love my Whirlypop. I usually go traditional, with just a bit of butter and some salt, but occasionally I will sprinkle one a bit of sugar with the salt. My favorite is kettle corn, though I don't make it too often.

Forthright, where do you find Amish Red Popping Corn? I'd love to try some.

Muffinator, I first found it at a local orchard that has a farmer's market, but you can also order it online. It's cheap in itself, but the delivery costs can be pricey.
Here's a link, but there are lots of others if you google.

microwave popcorn is about the only thing I like from a microwave... at the store or if there is a fair - Kettle Corn reigns supreme! But if I were to just pop up some corn with a popper or use the old oil in the bottom of a covered pot method - nothing beats a little old bay seasoning sprinkled on top.

grapeseed oil is the key to great pan popped popcorn! and don't even think about getting that iodized salt crap anywhere near the popcorn, just grind up kosher salt with a mortar and pestle till it's powdery and you're good to go.

I just love the title: Thoreau on Popcorn.

We're big on the fake powdery cheese. I haven't eaten popcorn in a while, though... since Mom got a Whirly I've inherited her air popper, but I have no place to put it in my dinky kitchen.

My boyfriend and I love to make air popped popcorn with smoked spanish paprika and finely grated Parmesan cheese, tossed with a bit of oil to help coat the popcorn, or sometimes butter. We also like to toss popcorn with lemon pepper and a bit of salt for a different type of snack.

Butter and smoked salt, baby. Air popped. Heaven.
Alternative: dill, butter (w/garlic squeezed in while melting), salt.

I love fresh kettle corn from the Farmer's Market in the fall. But as far as taste (where calories aren't a factor), I have to go with movie popcorn with a ton of butter.

Air-popped popcorn sprinkled with a little bit of olive oil and tamari, then generously dusted with Brewer's (nutritional) yeast. Yum!

I love popcorn! Butter and garlic is always great, or olive oil and pepper, or any number of spices. I've even melted a bit of sugar (with water and a little tab of butter) for a quick faux kettle corn.

For those not in the know... if you want to stick to air popping, all you need is a brown paper bag (like a lunch sack) in the microwave. You'll never buy microwave popcorn again. Not only is it healthier and cheaper, it's easier to control the portion! (and you can, of course, reuse the brown paper bag for any number of things!)
